The School of Creative Convergence Education is a faculty that provides the theoretical basis and practices required for interdisciplinary convergence. Through a chemical integration that dissolves the boundaries between multiple academic disciplines such as humanities, sociology, economics, natural science, and engineering, the school's goal is to train talented individuals who are equipped not only with convergent capabilities but can also tackle complex problems in creative ways.
Educational Goals
Based on the integration of academic disciplines founded upon a Christian worldview, the School of Creative Convergence Education aims to nurture and produce highly qualified professionals equipped with a sharp intellect and upright character. The following are the types of individuals that the school plans to produce: individuals who are armed with a Christian worldview and ethical beliefs, individuals who will create new values through a convergence of humanities and science technology and will become the pioneers of converged industry, individuals who have practical business skills based in convergent fields, and individuals who have exceptional communication skills and leadership.
Major Programs
Student-Designed Convergence Studies
Student-Designed Convergence Study is a major in which students design their own new and creative areas independent of existing majors. Any Korean student can apply as a second major, and if approved by the Academic Advisor and supervised by the professor, the student will be recognized for his or her baccalaureate with his or her first major. (However, Life Sciences, Advanced Computer Engineering, and Advanced Electronic Engineering are not applicable.) This major allows students to discover their aptitudes and potentials and to engage them in creative majors, providing opportunities to expand their majors in various fields.
Global Convergence Studies
The Global Convergence Studies (GCS) major allows students to build a unique 100% English mediated major program, different from any of the official English mediated major programs offered by Handong Global University. An academic advisor gives support through 1:1 mentoring when designing the major. Furthermore, because the major curriculum consists of can embrace this major. Some examples of GCS majors are: Studies in Education, Christian Studies, Urban Planning, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Film Studies, Culture and Conflict Resolution, International Finance Administration, Visual Communication and Design, and International Human Services Administration.
Global Korean Studies
Global Korean Studies, in an era of globalization, provides the knowledge of Korean studies necessary to work for global companies or to operate global projects in Korea. The major also aims for international students to be a bridge between Korea and their home country by learning the development of Korea. In addition, Korean or international students can work as Korean language teachers around the world through courses for ‘Korean Language Teacher Certification’, thereby contributing to more effective globalization of Korean Studies and its culture. Global Korean Studies course is designed to provide students with a general, holistic understanding of Korean humanities (language, literature, philosophy, history) and social science (politics, economy, society and culture) as well as Korean language teaching courses (Korean language teachers training program) for international students. International students can take it as the first or second major, but Korean students can only take this as a second major.
Mathematics and Statistics
In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, a major in mathematics and statistics provides basic competencies in solving the diverse problems of industry and to promote the major’s specialty in a range of fields. The Mathematics and Statistics major encourages intensive learning of the methodologies underlying many different fields. You can develop skills in conceptualization and analysis. In this era of AI and big data, you will learn how to create new trends, quickly discern technological changes, and undergo multilayered quantitative thinking.
Teacher Education Program (TEP)
The Teacher Education Program educates Christian teachers and education experts who will lead the recovery and transformation of genuine education in various educational fields including Christian alternative schools and overseas mission schools. TEP not only fosters educational knowledge based on a Christian worldview, but also pursues a vocation for education; the recovery and transformation of education. In the TEP program, there are 6 courses with a total of 18 credits including student teaching. The curriculum includes Introduction to Education, Philosophy of Christian Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Evaluation, Education Technology and Methods, and Student Teaching courses. In 2015, Handong Global University earned teaching credential accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). TEP graduates will receive ACSI Christian School Teacher Certification upon graduation.
Holistic Global Citizenship Program (HGCP)
This is the world's first program to provide global citizenship education in a comprehensive and concrete manner fundamental to achieving the SDGs, which are global challenges that humanity must solve together as an international community. The program has a core purpose in cultivating global talents who have the right values ​​and attitudes such as honesty, integrity, and responsibility, and thus strengthen sustainable development capabilities within each major. The curriculum maximizes students' global competencies required by the 21st century by training in creative problem-solving methods through projects and field-related courses. These competencies needed in various majors provide integrated holistic leadership education that combines spirituality, character, and intellect based education. In addition they enable individual growth as mature leaders. Certificates are issued to students who have completed this program and may be used to enhance portfolios and competencies as professionals in the international community to be linked with possible future employment.
Global Problem Solver Program (GPSP)
The Creative Convergence Education Center's Global Problem Solver Program (GPSP) is an educational program fostering entrepreneurship based on a Christian spirit and cultivating international leaders who can solve global problems. Under a foundational spirit that views “solving others' problems” as practicing love for others, we focus on solving global problems that are intertwined culturally, religiously, politically and economically between countries and peoples. This educational program helps students in various majors to cooperate in solving global problems through teamwork so that they not only acquire global problem-solving skills, but also find their own identity and life purpose. After completion of the program, it will be possible to build several portfolios necessary for employment, and some of the students will be able to engage in entrepreneurship or start a job. By learning to solve global problems in a laboratory setting with help from expert coaches, students cultivate problem-solving skills by actually solving problems. Through the “Learning by Doing” process a student is recognized as a Global Problem Solver (GPS).
Special Program for Unification of Korea (SPUK)
All students receive a substantial education on reunification to prepare them to become citizens of a unified Korea. 10% of HGU graduates will be trained to become leaders of reunification who settle in North Korea when its doors open, contributing to the development of post-reunification North Korea and the social intergration of the two Koreas.
