January 24 to 26, Handong Global University hosted the 2nd UNAI ASPIRE Global Citizenship Forum . The theme was the City Development of Pohang through Sustainable Development Goals. These goals are based on resolving issues of urban development, human rights, and environmental pollution. The forum served as an opportunity to recognize the issues of Pohang and seek countermeasures. The issues were based on the sustainable development goals and entrepreneurship created by the UN. Twenty students of Handong Global University participated.
On the first day, the Cooperation Manager, Jisung Lim, of the UN Association World League lectured on, "The Economic Trends of the 21st century and the 4th Industrial Revolution." His second presentation was, 'Sustainable Development Goals Centered in Methodology'. In addition, a talk on 'Human Rights and the Needs in the Pohang Area' was delivered by Director Manjae Yang of the Pohang Regional Society Welfare Research Institute. The lecture on 'The Local Community and Social Economy' was given by Professor Byungchurl Seo of HGU.
On the second day, 'Global Entrepreneurship and Business Model Development' and 'Sharing Value Creation Projects' by Representative Jinsol Hwang, of the Bridge, was presented. During the event, students had lectures, mentoring, and coaching. Based on the learning programs, they collected data, and interviewed related people. Next, the participants created project models by visiting various areas of Pohang.
During the last day, five teams, including: the Podam Team that produced plastic by collecting cigarette butts; the Smigrant, Smile Grant Team project to establish an agency to reduce the number of illegal workers and improve human rights of foreign workers; the Delight Team project to establish a street to revitalize the business district of Pohang with the motif of Sonjung Station market in 1913; the Wheelchair Team that made a project of car sharing for the disabled; and the Sangsang Corporation Team project to make a porpoise, the Korean dolphin, made bread to show the importance of preventing illegal capture of these sea creatures. As a result, the first prize was given to Sangsang Corporation Team, the 2nd prize was given to Smigrant Team, and the Delight Team received the 3rd prize.
UNAI ASPIRE is a volunteer group for international youth education. UNAI was initiated by the Secretary General of UNAI Aspire in 2011.UNAI ASPIRE is promoting various campaigns, volunteer activities, and academic activities to spread global citizenship to youth between the ages of 15 to 34 years old. The members include young people from Japan, Mexico, India and Korea.
※ Terminology
UNAI (United Nations Academic Impact) is a global program under the UN. It was officially launched in 2010 by the former secretary general of the UN, Dr. Ki-moon Ban. The program was part of the eighth goal of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The UN works with global universities to resolve the issues of poverty, to improve human rights, to develop sustainable projects, and to resolve disputes.
