As part of the UNESCO UNITWIN project, Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) hosted the 2nd Data Science Camp from the 29th of last month to 2nd day of this month at the Handong-ASEAN Start-up & Innovation Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Targeting students from six partner universities in Cambodia (RUPP, ITC, RULE, NUM, PUC, AUCC), this camp covered introductory sessions on data science, basic mathematics/statistics, AI application development using ORANGE3, data preprocessing and visualization, basic modeling, and business analysis. The intermediate level included two tracks: one focused on developing data-driven applications using Dart language and Flutter framework, and another on learning machine learning methodologies. The camp aimed to recruit 140 participants (100 for the introductory level, 40 for the intermediate level), but received over 310 registrations from local students and professionals, indicating high interest in data science within Cambodia.

Six professors from Handong Global University (Professors Jae Seon Lee, Yoon Seon Kim, Cham Gil Hong, Seong Bae Cho, Hye Bong Choi, Dae Young Na, and Honorary Professor Dae Sik Kim) along with two UNITWIN researchers (Researcher Su Hyun Kim and Do Won Kim) conducted theoretical and practical lectures for Cambodian students, with the assistance of nine undergraduate and graduate students from Handong Global University.

The curriculum emphasized practical skill development through group exercises using real-world data such as LinkedIn job search data, alongside theoretical education covering basic mathematics/statistics required for data science and AI, foundational theories of machine learning, modeling algorithms, and concepts for model evaluation. The tailored theory and practical classes, reflecting the academic levels and interests of local students, received positive feedback, with students expressing anticipation for the next stage of the program.

Dy Piseth, a student participant from American Phnom Penh University, expressed his desire to utilize the knowledge gained from this opportunity to positively impact his local community, stating, "Through the advanced experience and know-how of South Korea as a digital powerhouse, I want to contribute to my community."

Professor Jae Seon Lee of Handong Global University revealed plans for the next advanced stage of the program, stating, "The data science program hosted by Handong Global University under the UNESCO UNITWIN is already well-known among government agencies, universities, and companies in Phnom Penh since last summer. In the upcoming advanced stage of the program, we plan to collaborate with various local companies to conduct a hackathon-style program, which is expected to assist participating students in their employment and career paths."
