Handong Global University International Law School, Winner of The International Maritime Law Mock Trial Competition

- A total of 16 teams participated, and Handong Global University’s ‘Sea Sheriff’ team received the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Award with the prize money.

Handong Global University (President Do-Soung Choi) International Law School students Dae-ho Park, Chan-hong Park, Hye-kyung Seo, and Jae-an Ok won the ‘2023 International Maritime Law Mock Trial Competition for universities (graduate schools) hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on the 26th of last month.

A total of 16 teams participated in this International Maritime Law Mock Trial Competition, and a total of 8 teams advanced to the finals through argument evaluation. Participants engaged in a fierce logical battle from the standpoint of resource development and environmental protection in the “Dispute related to the establishment of deep-sea mineral resource development rules and application for development business plans.” The ‘Sea Sheriff’ team (Handong Global University International Law School), which earned points by expressing the most logical opinions, won the prize, gaining the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Award and a prize of 5 million won.

Dae-ho Park, a member of the winning team in this competition, said, “The identification of blind spots, application of governing law, and legal interpretation learned at the International Law School were of great help in exploring pending issues in international maritime law. In particular, because of the training to find similarities and differences between precedents emphasized by the school, and intensive defense classes and mock trials in the summer semester, I was able to easily prepare a rebuttal even in a short hour.”

Professor Lee, Hee Eun of Handong Global University International Law School, who coached the winning team, said, “I am happy that the students’ learning and growth through oral argument classes has borne fruit through this mock trial competition.”

Participants in the competition said that it served as an opportunity to realize that the capabilities of international maritime law experts play an important role in protecting maritime territories. Cho Seung-hwan, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, said, “I hope this competition will serve as an opportunity to nurture future excellent maritime law and maritime territory experts.”

Since its opening in 2002, Handong Global University International Law School has produced 575 lawyers, approximately 70% of its graduates. Handong Global University International Law School conducts American law and international law lectures 100% in English based on the American law school curriculum and is achieving excellent results in various domestic and international mock trial competitions.
