President Chang Soon-heung of Handong Global University visited Mandalay, Myanmar on last 15th and met with Mandalay Mayor Ye Lwin, President of Mandalay Technical University, Sint Soe, and a member of the Mandalay City Development Committee and discussed for cooperation for Mandalay Smart City project.

Mandalay is the second city in Myanmar and is actively pursuing the Smart City project under the leadership of the present Mayor Ye Lwin as of 2016. At the 32nd ASEAN Summit held in Singapore last April, Mandalay was included among the 10 most promising Smart City development candidates announced by the Prime Minister of Singapore. Urban development committees including the Mandalay Mayor visited Korea last year and participated in the Smart City meetings and forums held in major Korean cities, such as Seoul and Songdo.

On the occasion, the three chiefs of the three organizations, President Chang Soon-heung, Mayor Ye Lwin, and President Sint Soe, agreed to cooperate together for the Mandalay Smart City project, and especially for this purpose, Handong Global University promised to actively support the professional staff of the school in various fields such as Big Data, Computer Engineering, Urban Planning, Construction, and Traffic System.

"I am delighted to be working with the Mandalay Government and the Mandalay Technical University, one of the best universities in Myanmar, for the Smart City project in Mandalay, the second city in Myanmar,” said President Chang Soon-heung. "In the future, we will work together to contribute substantially to the development of Mandalay by closely cooperating with the two institutions of Mandalay."

Mayor Ye Lwin stated, "I am trying to benchmark the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system of South Korea, which is regarded as a world-class advanced system, for the Mandalay Smart City project and introduce it to Mandalay. I am looking forward to the successful completion of the Smart City project with Korean experts through a close cooperation with Handong Global University."

During his visit to Mandalay, President Chang Soon-heung signed a cooperative exchange agreement with Mandalay Technical University, which is considered to be the best prestigious engineering university in Myanmar, following Yangon Technical University in Myanmar. Through this cooperation, we plan to establish and promote continuous cooperation for convergent education and research among the two universities.

On the other hand, President Chang Soon-heung visited Myanmar, an UNITWIN program subject country, on a 13th to 16th schedule. On the 14th, he visited Yangon, Myanmar and had a pleasant conversation with Myint Thein, the president of YTU, and then gave a special lecture for faculty members and students under the topic of "Korea’s Higher Education Innovation: Focused on the Case of KAIST and Handong Global University". In addition, he had a meeting with the Ambassador of Myanmar Lee Sanghwa and asked for interest and cooperation in relation to Myanmar and Handong Global University’s UNITWIN program. On the 15th, he visited President Mie Mie Thet Thwin of UCSY and held a lecture for graduate students and professors.
