Pohang City Children’s Canteen Management Support Center, operated and commissioned by Handong Global University, developed a ‘Food Poisoning Prevention Device using the Internet of Things.’ This was a specialized project and will be disseminated on a small scale at the Pohang City Children’s Canteen Center.
This device is a food poisoning prevention system developed by converging technology between the Internet of Things and Information & Communication technology. In order to prevent food poisoning in small children’s canteen centers with less than 100 kids, the device informs the users of the temperature, humidity, and food poisoning index. This determines the occurrence and multiplication of harmful bacteria. Customized information will be taken by the big data network of the Center. The data will be collected every 30 minutes or at one hour intervals. When the food poisoning index goes up to a dangerous level, a warning alarm will sound and lead to activities to normalize the humidity and temperature. This will create an environment to prevent food poisoning.

The device was completed, installed, and operated normally after stabilization steps in about 140 children’s canteens. According to one Director of a children’s center that installed this device, located in Bukgu Pohang, “This is useful to small kitchens. The device easily shows the food poisoning index. Even if the data shows a problem, the center can fix the problem. We are using the device easily.”
According to Mikyung Kim, the Team Manager of the Planning and Operation Team, “In particular, through the LED color lamp, noticeable environment data is given related to temperature, humidity, food poisoning levels, and provides a warming alarm. This indicates the current status of the food. The small size fits the space utilization. Many centers of small scale accepted to the installment when it was offered.”
The Director of the Center, Hyunggi Doh said, “This project is related to the ‘Free Consulting for Harmful Micro-organisms’ which is implemented to prevent food poisoning. It is expected to provide a synergy effect in the Food Poisoning Prevention Project. We will do our best to actively utilize this project. This will keep children’s food safe. The monitoring will eventually be expanded to include micro dust, water quality, and salinity. “

The center is an idea bank to provide various specialized projects that have great impact. About 300 people visited the center to benchmark the device. In order to enhance canteen safety, the core objective was planned met. For the first time in Korea, an “Ideal Kitchen” model for a children’s canteen was developed and registered. In addition, for the first time in Korea a micro-organism analysis room was secured. Free consulting for harmful micro-organisms were initiated targeting small-scale canteen centers for children 400 times per year. In addition, the ‘Interesting Nutrition Country Experience’ consisted of twelve sections. The ‘Nutri-mom Café’ provided a venue to communicate with parents. This was a community led project.
