Handong Global University aims to educate and nurture 工 type global talent. 工 type refers to talents comprised of human character, intelligence, and globalized competency.
Handong Global University stresses converged education between academics to nurture and grow knowledge. The ‘Student Design Convergence Major’ began operating last year. HGU aimed to nurture converged talents through cross-studies and admissions without requiring the students to decide their major or double major. It is expected that this approach will provide a wider range of major choices to students. In addition, it is expected that interests and professionalism will be enhanced for foreign students by operating the global convergence major for foreign students.
Handong Global University established the Creative and Convergence Educational Center in 20014. This would secure professionalism of converged education, provide systematic and converged educational services. Last year, the Student Design Convergence Major and the Global Convergence Major was established providing specified and professional converged education.
The Creative and Convergence Educational Center nurtures talents who are secured with the Christian worldview and ethical beliefs, talents to take the lead in future converged industry by creating new values, talents who are secured with practical working competency based on convergence, and talents who are secured with excellent communication skills and leadership.
Students submit academic plans to the Creative and Convergence Educational Center Major Acceptance Committee of professors. The Committee reviews and deliberates over the proposal in order to support the student’s desired academic curriculum. If the proposal is passed, the suggested major is completed as the student’s 2nd major after approval by the President of HGU.
During the curriculum, students receive constant academic guidance and management. The Creative and Convergence Educational Center provides counselling, academic guidance, and future career guidance through the Academic Advisor.
For domestic students, this is a relatively unknown design convergence major. Never-the-less the number of students applying for this major is increasing. The program was started with three students last second semester,. This year, twenty-two students chose this major. This converged major has diverse fields. One student majored in Management, Politics, and Economics and another student majored in Art Law by converging Design and Law.
Seolgi Noh, who chose mathematical science as the convergence design major said, “I needed in-depth study in math to enter Graduate School of Economics. These courses were not included in regular majors. I had some trouble until I found the ‘Student Design Convergence Major’. Now, I can study the proper course for my future. I really like this specialized program for majors.”
Dahye Shin, majoring in Art Law said, “Since I was in the 8th semester it was not easy to choose a converged major. I am satisfied to study what I wanted to research. This major will be a greater help for my vision.”
President Jinwhan Kwak of the Creative Convergence Educational Center said, “Consumer-centered wide range of major choice, convergence and cooperation between interdisciplinary studies were possible through the Design Convergence Major. In this era, self-led learning competency is important. Students need to experience on-site activity and students need to resolve problems. We are encouraging students to learn from on-site fields.”
