Handong Global University has one undergraduate school student of Mechanical Control Engineering who published two papers in SCI journal in the nuclear field.
Wansu Kim researched ‘Block off coolant leakage when line breaks at a research purpose nuclear reactor’ under the leadership of Professor Kwon-young Lee, of the School of Mechanical Control and Engineering.
The research develops theoretical translation models on siphon breaking and coolant leakage in the line. The Siphon Breaker Simulation Program was utilized based on the flow analysis model they developed.
The research has great significance since it can contribute to the improvement of safety in research purpose nuclear reactors. The papers were recognized for their utility in the design and analysis of nuclear reactors.
The research results on the development of the flow analysis model were published in the Nuclear Engineering and Design Journal in October, on-line. The Development and Utilization of Simulation Program was published in the Annals of Nuclear Energy in November, on-line.
In addition, the research was presented at the ‘International Nuclear Power Heat and Water Power Operation and Safety Society Conference (NUTHOS-11) held in October, in Gyeongju.
Wansu Kim said, “I am so glad that I achieved results better than expected at the undergraduate school student level. I thought about the role and mission of engineers. I would like to express my appreciation to assistant professor, of the School of Mechanical Control Engineering, and the Foundation of Specialization Projects.”
Professor Kwon-young Lee, said, “The Siphon Breaker is one of the important devices for research safety. The research results will contribute to nuclear reactor exports. I applaud this good result combined with research and education through research on the undergraduate student level.”
The research was supported by ‘Gyeongbuk and Far East Talents Nurturing Foundation for Sustainable Energy and Environment’. Through the Foundation additional research is proceeding.
Handong Global University was selected for three projects by the ‘Gyeongbuk and Far East Talents Nurturing Foundation for Sustainable Energy and Environment’. This will be regional strategic projects to enhance the local area.
