On November 26, 2016 at Pohang, the 5th RPM Start-ups Competition, was held with Handong Global University and Pohang City. RPM is an acronym for Revolutions Per Minute. RPM aims to share innovative ideas within a few given minutes.
In this event, people had a chance to think about start-ups. This is not an easy challenge. People had a time to think about how to begin start-ups.
The citizens of Pohang who wanted to join were invited to participate as audience evaluators. Each audience evaluator had the right to vote for three teams they liked the most.
In this competition, racing was the theme. Twelve teams presented for two minutes and thirty seconds. Then the team had three minutes of questions and answers. Next, there was a vote taken of all the audience evaluators. Afterwards, everyone went to the hotel for dinner, for the awarding of prizes, and for the closing remarks.
During the idea round by the teams, none of them had a prototype of their product. The prototype round by the teams with prototypes of their products was a separate event. In the idea round, there were nine teams. During the prototype round there were three teams show showed their ideas.
There were a number of prestigious outer evaluators. Representative Seokwon Kwon of INNObjects, Silicon Valley; Representative Dongwon Shin of Neoply China;, visiting Professor Jinsang Yu, of the School of ICT Start-ups of Handong Global University; Representative Hakju Kim of Kim Hakju Research; Representative Taeksu Lee of Winbestventure Capital; and Representative Jina Kim of Unicon Angel Investment gave their input as evaluators.
There were two prize winners from the idea round who were awarded a three week trip. One prize winner from the prototype round was given three months of on-site visits. The winner had to select between Silicon Valley, Shanghai, and Israel to experience advanced start-ups and local sites. The winners all received a round trip air ticket, local accommodations, and living expenses. Silicon Valley, Shanghai, and Israel are representative venues for rigorous start-ups. This provided the prize winners with new experiences in various advanced start-up locations. This was for the winners to learn about the culture and the practical steps involved in start-ups. Through these visits, the prize winners will be prepared for their own successful start-ups. They will also meet various on-site businessmen, and receive start-up lectures.
For the promotion of start-ups as an engine for the growth of Pohang, Pohang city and Handong Global University will co-host a number of events: the 60mph, LINC Project, the PRIME Project. The Start-ups Supportive Office of Industry-Academy Cooperation of Handong Global University will organize the events. Gyeongbuk Creative Innovation Center, Pohang Creative Economy and Innovation Center, and the University Creative Job Center of Handong Global University will also provide support.
In the first, second, third, and fourth competitions, fourteen, eleven, fourteen, and thirteen teams participated by showing various items and ideas. The winner of the 1st competition for new converged technology to monitor rehabilitation information through electromyogram and HRS sensors on the leg support device technology was able to bend. This will be utilized in the self-rehabilitation sector, the medical diagnosis sector, and the digital health care sector. The device will provide information from the patient to indicate if they work on their rehabilitation exercises properly or not. The team also received the grand prize at the ‘2015 Start-ups Competition Using National Defense Technology’.
Among the prize winners of the Second competition, ‘M plus cosmetic’ received the grand prize by introducing a customized skin solution to diagnose, prescribe, and manage the individual’s. They classified the skin into sixteen different skin types. The team also received the third prize at the ’Bio Start-ups Completion’ hosted by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute. At that competition the item was called a Customized Skin Care Products Using Consumer Data.
