The ‘Handong Manna Project’ started May 26. It has continued during the second semester thanks to constant participation of many alumni and supporters. The Handong Mana Project delivers warmth during the cold weather. The ‘Handong Manna Project’ encourages students not to skip their meal when they face financial difficulties. For those who have financial difficulties, the meal cost is 100 won when they click ‘honor code: Handong Manna 100’ at the Korean Table formal meal.
The first supporter of Handong Manna said, “I was sad when I heard there were some students who could not have meals. I wanted to help them so they could have a healthy school life without financial concern over their meals.” Through the first project, 1,250 meals were prepared thanks to private sponsors and related organizations. From May 23 to June 17, 1,889 meals were sponsored by Handong Manna for students. This semester, about 2,416 meals were provided to students.
Suyeon Kim, one of the sponsors said, “I saw one of my close friends was using Handong Manna at the school cafeteria. I realized that Handong Manna is desperately needed for many students. I only have a small amount of money to give. I decided to support others hoping this will be helpful.” One alumni supporter said, “This reminds me of the time when I ate Ramen and acted like I really enjoyed it. In fact I was eating the soup to reduce my cost for meals. I cannot donate a large amount of money but I hope this small thing will be helpful. I also hope this will remain as another wonderful tradition of Handong.”
One student who used Handong Manna said, “I really appreciate that I don’t need to worry about my meals anymore. I am from a low-income family so it is really a great help in a difficult situation.”
Handong Manna was operated on the Honor Code. This helped implement the project successfully. At Handong Global University, the school cafeteria and bakery menu are on sale based on the conscience of the students. 99.7% of the students are honestly following the rules. It turned out the willingness to keep the honor code for Handong Manna was high. According to a survey conducted with students who used Handong Manna, 94% said they followed the Honor Code. This project showed that Handong people themselves keep the ‘Honor Code’ and live honestly at Handong.
According to organizer of the project, “The project is not only a meal supportive project. Others participate in sharing to assist those who skip their meals due to financial difficulties. In addition, the healthy culture of Handong is created by looking to use Handong Manna based on each person’s conscience.”
Anyone can join the Handong Manna Project. The fund-raining amount is expected to be raised.
