- Third on-site survey after the earthquake in Nepal

-On November 8, there was a Joint Seminar applicable to urban development strategies after an earthquake

Last April, Handong Global University dispatched the Earthquake Damage Restoration Team after a massive earthquake in Nepal. The team supported the restoration process of building, providing countermeasures for the urban traffic system, and supporting temporary shelter construction measures for the victims. As a follow-up measure, Handong Global University is making efforts to improve the quality of life of Katmandu, Nepal. The improvements are based on the knowledge and experience in urban environment improvement projects in the poor area of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

In the seminar, eleven students worked together. The lead Professor was Jamoon Gu, of the School of Spatial & Environment Systems. Among the students were graduate school students of the International Development Cooperation Department and undergraduate school students of the School of Spatial & Environment Systems. After the earthquake, the concept of urban development was introduced. Restoration measures in urban areas, development of prefabricated houses, village restoration, and new town development were topics addressed by local professors and students of the Urban Development Major. In addition, there was a survey of restoration sites after the Katmandu earthquake. Consultations with related departments of urban development policy also occurred.

The on-site survey was scheduled to improve the quality of life and shelter types in Tapatali and Juributi villages. These two locations were representative of the villages in Katmandu. Among them, Tapatali village requires countermeasures to deal with sanitation and disease. Thousands of people are living with exposed garbage creating a sanitary crisis and breeding diseases.

Most cities of developing countries have similar urban environmental problems such as poverty, quality of life and air pollution, traffic jams, poor shelters, and the creation of slums. Long-term urban development strategies and strategic infrastructures, shelter environment improvements for the urban poor are required. The goal is to establish effective and sustainable city policies with the governments in developing countries. and the Joint Seminar strengthened the research capacity building of the local universities in the developing countries. This was done by sharing examples of urban restoration, and housing policies with the local professors, students, and government staff.

As part of the UNESCO UNITWIN project, Handong Global University is providing on-site surveys, hosting symposiums and seminars with experts and publishing research reports in order to emphasize the necessity of education and urban development. The policies of urban development in Katmandu, Nepal, were similar to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
