On November 4, 2016, the 3rd UN Academic Impact, UNAI was held at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Seoul. The forum was a follow-up measure of the Gyeongju Declaration adopted in the 66th UN NGO Conference held in Gyeongju. The Conference discussed the necessity of education for global citizens and the establishment of global platforms.
The event was co-hosted by UNAI Korea and Handong Global University, the hub of UNAI. Speakers shared cases of education for global citizenship. They explained how supporting universities in developing countries and international development, converges the education of global citizens.
About 200 people attended. These included students volunteering with UNAI ASPIRE, youth education volunteer groups under the UN, hub and member universities of UNAI, cooperative institutes for developing countries, research institutions, and international organizations. The time was fruitful.
In particular, Handong Global University drew a picture for global citizen education by promoting a multi-lateral Memorandum of Understanding on exchanging and promoting joint programs centered at the hub universities of UNAI.
President Younggil Kim of UNAI Korea, the host of this forum, said, “In this modern era, global citizen education is the new educational paradigm. The goal is to grow honesty, values, and attitudes that go beyond simple knowledge and know-how. It is expected that UNAI Korea will be the bridgehead for global citizen education.”
According to the President of Handong Global University, Soon-Heung Chang, “The role of education to achieve sustainable goals is essential. It is a crucial time to share a new paradigm of education for this generation. Sustainable Development Goals are imperative for addressing global issues.”
