On October 21, 2016, the Acquazen Team of Handong Global University received the grand prize at the ‘3rd Water Environment, Policy and Technology Exhibition for University Students’ which was held at EXCO, Daegu.
The competition was held by the Ministry of the Environment. The goal was to develop fresh ideas from youth. This would lead to the development of noble ideas and talents. The team created a project for the theme of ‘Suggestions on a Separator for Effectively Harvesting Algae’.
The prize winners belong to the School of Spatial Environment System Engineering of Handong Global University and are members of the Civil Engineering Society. The students took the ‘Environmental Ecology Engineering’ class and realized the problems of algae. They developed a project to seek countermeasures for algae problems. In addition, in order to further develop this project, the team joined the exhibition.
The team heard advice from the Professor of the School of Spatial Environment System Engineering, Kyeongmo Ahn, “Algae is not a bad thing itself and it can become a resource.” This led to the team idea to harvest algae on-site. They learned physical separation of algae was possible through centrifugal force. The harvest produced clean algae. The team also developed grafted technology by using a ‘Facilitator using a tesla turbine’ from the Capstone Project topics.
The grand prize for the team was given by the Ministry of the Environment. As an additional prize, they had an opportunity to visit the advanced water and environment facilities abroad. In addition, when the prize winners apply for an internship at the Korean Environmental Industry & Technology Institute and the Korean Environment Corporation they will be viewed favorably.

Student Dongmin Noh said, “In order to enhance trust and persuasion in the final presentation, the feasibility of the idea was explained logically through a systemized arrangement with visual data. We received a high score. We will be the people who restore the fallen area by reviving the ruined area once again. We will rebuild the foundation. My friends and I have a vision for excellent water quality in the environment.”
From May 4 to June 30, ten teams were selected from the 1st evaluation. 73 teams were reviewed through their homepages. The team from HGU had a time to enhance the completion of their research by developing projects.
