On October 18, a workshop: “Activation of the East Coast Smart Aquaculture Industry” was held. The workshop was hosted by the Gyeongsangbukdo Province and conducted by the Gyeongbuk Marine Forum and the Handong East-Sea Rim Research Institute.

The workshop was hosted to share measures to converge ICT technology with aquaculture. New development strategies of aquaculture for the East-Sea Rim were desired. There were fifty participants including staff of the aquaculture industry, marine forum members, related government officials, related professors and graduate school students.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Changgon Kim said, "At the end of last year, the National Institute of Fishery Science announced that our institution established a smart fishery management system using IT technology. This is bringing a transformation into the traditional aquaculture industry. Now aquaculture is changing into an advanced, future industry.  Korea has focused on fishery product exports. Now is the time for promoting an advanced aquaculture system export project."

As the first presenter, Dr. Yoonsuk Lee, of the Marine Development Institute, presented the 'Direction of Aquaculture Industry in this Era of Convergence.' Dr. Seun Kye Byun explained 'Revitalization Methods of the Stary Flounder in the East Sea’. Lastly, Professor Seungkyu Song, of the School of Life Science presented ‘Preventative Diseases of the Stary Flounder and applications to Smart Aquaculture.’ After all the presentations, there were discussions, and then a question and answer session followed.

Director Hyunggi Doh said, "I look forward to seeing the aquaculture industry converged with information technology. This will be helpful to the advancement of the aquaculture industry in the East Sea.”
