On October 7, 2016, ‘The 2nd Global Service Learning Conference’ was held at the Conference Hall of Seoul National University. The Conference was hosted by Handong Global University and Korea University Council for Social Service. The Conference was conducted by the Global Social Contribution Association of Seoul National University and the Engineering Education Innovation Center of HGU.
‘Global Service Learning’ is a combined concept of service and learning. Students receive a holistic learning opportunity utilizing the academic learning during their classed. Students build in-depth academic knowledge beyond social volunteering activities in other cultures.
120 professors, staff, researchers, and students from universities participated. Major details of the volunteer activities and learning programs abroad from various universities and institutions were introduced. Various educational achievements were shared related to global service learning. In-depth discussions of social volunteer activities linked with a major, the local society and practical education were provided.
The event started with the keynote speech ‘Project Development of KOPIA Volunteers and Future Challenges’. Volunteer activities were shared from: ‘Busan National University, Seoul National University, Yeonsei University, Korean University Council for Social Service, and Handong Global University. The information included educational and academic achievements as well as practical experiences. Twenty students shared their experiences in abroad.
According to the Head of the Center, Hwangee Yong, “I look forward to expanding the research and future direction of volunteer activities of university students through this conference. In addition, more talents will develop who can change the world through volunteer activities and learning with genuine sharing and a service attitude.”
