-Parents of students who were martyred also joined the event

President Soon-heung Chang attended the ‘Fiji National Commemorative Event’ presided over by President Jioji Konousi Konrote of the Fiji Republic.

This event was held at the Westin Chosun. President Jioji Konousi Konrote and his wife, Ambassador Filimone Kau and his wife as well as 100 other people  participated.

The parents of the two martyrs from the mission activities at Nasikawa Vision College in 1997 also attended. They received a courtesy call from President Jioji Konousi Konrote. The President expressed his deepest appreciation for the noble spirit of the students and the constant interest and effort of Handong Global University in Fiji.

The two students went to the sea to wash off the leftover sand in the process of building a well to improve the drinking water quality. During that time in the sea they drowned. The Students of Handong Global University commemorate the spirit of the martyrs. Volunteer and mission activities are continuously going on in many countries in the world. In Handong Global University and Nasikawa Vision College, Fiji there are Martyred Memorial Plazas.

In 2014, Filimone Kau, Ambassador of Fiji to Korea visited Handong Global University. He laid flowers at the Memorial to the Martyrs. He appreciated the Fiji Martyred Memorial Plaza. In 2015, Ratu Inoke Kabuabola, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Fiji conferred an appreciation plaque to the martyred students and commemorated their sacrifice and spirit of volunteer activity. 

President Soon-Heung Chang said, “Cooperation in the fields of IT, energy, and the environment are essential. We will contribute to the development of Fiji and other neighboring countries through active cooperation.”

President Chang was appointed to the honorary Consul General of Fiji in June 2014. An agreement on mutual exchange of students and professors between Handong Global University and Fiji National University was signed in August 2014.

President Jioji Konousi Konrote served as the leader of the Armed Forces of Fiji for a long time. From 1990 to 1991 he took the high command of the UN peace keeping forces in Lebanon as Deputy Commander-in-chief of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. In addition, he served as the Minister of the Employment Production Industry from 2014 to 2015. He was elected as the 5^th President of Fiji Republic in November 2015.
