*For two months, the lecture was prolonged followed by the third lecture on October 5.

Under the theme of ‘Why not change your car? (The Smart Car Revolution)’, Handong Global University hosted six smart car relays. This special lecture was co-hosted by the School of Computer & Electronics Engineering, the Smart-Car Machine Learning Center, and the Office of Academic Information.

Recently, Google’s self-driving car was tested on the road. An autonomous driving car is on the rise and no longer a futuristic idea. In this context, this lecture was expected to deal with the effect of smart cars in our society in the near future.

The replay lecture covered six themes related to smart cars: the automobile industry’s paradigm shift led by IT and SW, the sensing and communication technology for smart cars, examples of advanced driving assistant systems and projects, the current status and future forecast of the smart car industry, the interaction between humans and automobiles in the new era of the smart car; an automobile led by artificial intelligence.

On September 22, Professor Gumin Jung, of the School of Electronic Engineering, at Kookmin University, presented the IT and SW technology in smart-cars. On September 29, Professor Junyoung Lee, of the School of Computer and Electronic Engineering, at Handong Global University, presented on sensing and communication technology in smart cars.

In the third special lecture, at Osuk Hall, the Advanced Driver Assistance System Technology and its utilization on-site was covered. Representative Junsuk Lee, of Baydas, presented the lecture. He graduated from the graduate l and undergraduate school   in Electric & Electronic Engineering. Through his lecture, visual image perception and processing principles were addressed. Business examples at the core of cars were another topic he presented.

Director, Jaegwan Lee, of the Korean Automotive Technology Institute delivered the fourth lecture. He graduated from Gyeongbuk National University and majored in electronic communication engineering at Tohoku University. He is a working-level representative in the field of smart-cars. He serves at various posts in the Hyundai Automobile Research Institute and Mitsubishi Motors, of Japan. He explained the necessity of autonomous driving car development and transformation along with the impact on the car industry caused by smart cars. By looking at the current status of the smart car industry in Korea and abroad, the future direction of automobiles was forecasted.

On September 27, Professor Sangwhan Kim, of the School of ICT, at HGU, delivered a lecture on humans & automobiles. In particular, he explained the interactions with smart cars. He received his doctoral degree at North Carolina State University, where he majored in human and cognitive engineering. His lecture was based on academic presentations dealing with the ways humans with DNA interact with cars that use electricity. His views included the proper interaction methods.

Professor Hee-Yeol Choi, of the School of Computer & Electronical Engineering, at HGU delivered the last lecture. He introduced successful cases of autonomous driving cars and artificial intelligence technology based on deep-learning.

In the discussion October 10th, ‘The future that smart cars will show to the people of Handong’ was held in Osuk Hall, at HGU. This serves as an opportunity to consider the impact and meaning of technology, the philosophy of artificial intelligence and the autonomous driving car will soon affect human life. The panel included Professor Shin Hong, Professor Sungsu Hwang, Professor Hakju Kim, and HwaChurl Son, and the master of ceremonies was Professor Kang Lee.

According to In-Jung Kim, the Director of the Center, and host of the relay lecture, “The telephone was just one communication device. However, it changed our paradigm when the smart phone was developed. The positive impact in society is limitless. I hope that the participants will become leaders who perceive social change first and then bring the change.”

President Soon-Heung Chang said, “ICT Convergence is called the fourth Industrial Revolution in this era. The smart car is one of the trends.  I sincerely hope this venue served as an opportunity to extend your knowledge, establish your vision, and confirm your direction to take the lead in changing the world with the smart-car.”
