President Soon-Heung Chang of Handong Global University and H.E. Abadula Gemeda Dago, the Speaker of the House of the People’s Representatives
-His contribution to promote democracy, education and economic development in Ethiopia was highly recognized.
Handong Global University granted an honorary doctoral degree in law to H.E. Abadula Gemeda Dago, the Speaker of the House of the People’s Representatives of Ethiopia.
On September 28, at the honorary granting ceremony which was held at All Nations Hall of HGU, President Soon-Heung Chang, the family of Abadula Gemeda Dago, the Ethiopian Ambassador Shiferaw Jarso Tedecha and his wife, Missionary Joongkuk Park, Missionary Eunhae Jang, the Dean of Academic Affairs Jongchurl Lee, President Sungjun Kang of the Graduate School, distinguished guests, and eighty students participated.

His Excellency, Abadula Gemeda Dago, served as Chief of Operations of the National Defense Force, he was Commander of the ground forces of the National Defense Force and is a self-proclaimed ‘Gospel Speaker of the House of the People’s Representatives’. He spreads the gospel in the national assembly of Ethiopia where many people are Muslims or Greek Orthodox Church.
In particular, he is the only Protestant leader in Ethiopia and contributed to the establishment of the democratic government by destroying the communist system of Ethiopia for seven years with the former Prime Minister.

His Excellency, Mr. Abadula Gemeda, the Speaker of the House of the People’s Representatives of Ethiopia
H.E. Mr. Abadula Gemeda accepted the gospel through the former Prime Minister. He was in his twenties. It was during combat that he experienced the grace of the living God. To this day he testifies to the grace of God in many gatherings and assemblies.
The Dean of the International Affairs Office, Professor Jaechun Won served as the Master of Ceremonies. The prayer was given by Pastor Jinhong Kim. Recommendations by Professor Sungjun Kang followed. When President Soon-Hung Chang and His Excellency, Mr. Abadula Gemeda went up to the platform, the participants delivered a round of big applause.

President Soon-Hung Chang said, “His Excellency’s contributions to the establishment of the democratic government of Ethiopia, national education, industrial development, and spreading the gospel in Africa are highly recognized. I sincerely hope that our good relationship will be long-lasting with our common purpose of spreading the gospel..”
In the acceptance remarks, Mr. Abadula Gemeda mentioned, “I invited President Soon-Heung Chang to the office of the lower Chamber of the Ethiopian Parliament. We had a service together, and the relationship brought us such fellowship.”
He added with tears, “It was not easy to stand in this place today. The honorary doctoral degree that I receive today is for my colleagues who lost their lives for democratization and spreading the gospel in Ethiopia against communism and fascism.”
“The doctoral degree that I am granted today by Handong Global University of Korea for successfully sharing the gospel and industrialization is meaningful. I will do my best to sacrifice the rest of my life to make a better Ethiopia by benchmarking Korea’s remarkable achievements both in faith and economics.”
After the remarks, a congratulatory performance was given by the African students of HGU and the atmosphere was electrifying!

After completing the ceremony, His Excellency, Mr. Abadula Gemeda, the Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives of Ethiopia discussed the cooperative measures of the UNESCO UNITWIN programs. He looked around the ‘Africa Week’ booths and visited Handong International Law School. On September 29, Mr. Abadula Gemeda, had an interview with the Pohang Far East Broadcasting Company. He visited Pohang Agricultural Research & Extension Services, and made a courtesy call to the Mayor of Pohang.
