Handong Global University was designated as the leading ‘WE-UP; Women in Engineering - Undergraduate Leading Program’. The competition was hosted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The selected universities were Kyungsung University, Dongkuk University, Seoul Women’s University, Sunmoon University, Sungkyungkwan University, Sungshin Women’s University, Ewha Women’s University, Jeonnam University, Hanyang University, and Handong Global University. Each university will receive 15 billion won (or about 15 million dollars) for three years.
Handong Global University plans to utilize the funds for developing and operating courses, career paths and job support. The funds will also support academy-industry-research, improve the educational environment, and will enable the purchase and operation of devices for the engineering laboratory.
The project is a new program to support female engineering talents to meet the social demand by shifting the focus of the engineering educational system of the Ministry of Education.
Handong Global University accounts for 43.5% or 540 students out of the 1,240 Schools of engineering. This is the highest number among the universities judged for nurturing female engineering talents.
Handong Global University hopes to nurture sensible engineering convergence professionals. I n order to do this, the Stepping Stone Course are being developed. The courses include: math, physics, and programming, a basic course in engineering, a converged engineering course, the sensible engineering Capstone Project, and female engineer leadership programs.
Handong Global University is scheduled to promote individual mentoring and tutoring to share future careers and vision. The participants will be graduates, seniors, and second year students.
In addition, a career map will be developed through a career path analysis of graduates of the engineering school. Mentoring programs will be developed to support the career path and start-ups led by female students. It will provide networking between the graduates, and strengthen the core competency of females for appropriate employment and start-ups.
Furthermore, Handong Global University received the top grade, “A” in the evaluation results for their structuring reforms, released by the Ministry of Education. The school was selected for major funds to aid programs/projects by the Ministry of Education such as the Creative Korea project, the Advancement of College Education Project, the Leaders in Industry/University Cooperation Program, the Supporting Project for the Normalization of Higher Education, the Prime Project, and the Nurturing Project for Female Engineering Talents.
