Handong Global University adopted the free semester system in the second semester of last year. It is the first among all the domestic universities in Korea. The free semester system refers to a system to accredit up to twelve credits from the activities outside of the school instead of in-class during a semester. The system encourages students to nurture their creativity, to search for their vision and to develop their future careers through voluntary experiences. Students can replace their activities for on-site practice, internships, projects, start-ups, language courses in foreign countries, foreign culture experiences as well as social service at home and abroad.
President Soon-Heung Chang encourages students to learn at on-site places by stressing the nurture of human talents to resolve problems. He desires students to take initiative to find on-site experiences in this era of self-learning. Through the system, the gap between real society and school will be narrowed and the connectivity between jobs and the classroom will be enhanced. During the free semester system, academic management will be reduced in order to prevent problems. Credits are recognized through a strict evaluation process.

According to Jaejung Lee, who was dispatched to Silicon Valley and completed the free semester system, “The period in Silicon Valley ignited my passion and thoughts about my future direction. I also connected things that the world requires with alumni, professors, and acquaintances connected to Handong Global University. I met many people who provided tireless teaching and support. I really appreciate all those people. I look forward to helping other Handong people rise to this challenge.”
Handong Global University initiated the free transfer system for student in a major, students with double majors and interdisciplinary majors. Students who enter without declaring a major and School may also participate. This new move that started at Handong Global University is expected to bring change to education in this era.
