August 12 to 14, 2016, the Chips Chips Team of Handong participated in the HURO-Competition field of the 5th Robot Convergence Festival, Intelligent SoC (System on a Chip). It was held at Daejeon Convention Center. They received the grand prize.

The Chips Chips Team of Handong, consisted of five students; Saewon Kim, Sion Yoon, Seungwoo Do, Eunbi Na, and Jungeun Yoon. They are seniors and members of the School of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, at HGU.

The Robot Convergence Festival is one of the largest robot events in Korea. There were 2270 teams for a total of 3980 people. 500 people from ten countries such as Malaysia participated. 30,000 people visited the Festival. The main theme was ‘Creativity, Passion, and Challenge! The Fierce Competition of Robots Will Awaken the World.’ The event was hosted by Daejeon City and Daejeon International Marketing Enterprise and Daejeon Techno Park were the co-organizers.

The Robot Convergence Festival, Intelligent System on a Chip Robot was hosted by the System Design Application Research Center of KAIST. The event was a Robot Convergence Festival. This is the highest level of robot completion. The HURO-Competition is an obstacle course comprised of jumping hurdles, passing barricades, and crossing bridges. The robot that takes the least amount of time to complete the circuit wins. The team from HGU was granted the Grand Prize!

SoCs are non-memory semiconductors that combine memory, central processing units, as well as sound and video output into a single chip. SoC robots integrate SoC semiconductor technology with robots to create intelligent robots that are capable of recognizing objects and making decisions autonomously.

The Chips Chips Team of the School of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, at HGU, prepared for the completion through the Capstone Design class. Professor Kang Lee provided his leadership to the team. The team prepared for one year to enter this completion. In the summer, during the last stages of preparation, the HGU team stayed at a home located in Daejeon. They were able to focus on the robot development with the support of the parents.

The biggest reason the team won this competition was the School of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, HGU teaches Electronic Science and Computing at the same time as undergraduate courses. All the five members of the Chips Chips team majored in electrical engineering as their first major. Their studies included electrical circuits, semi-conductors, and microprocessors. In particular, the team produced a video processing library that included programing training with the support of Professor Kang Lee last year. Their training efforts in programming were a great help.

According to Saewon Kim, “Joint work was not that easy and collaboration was the most important thing. I am very happy to have been part of this valuable team.” Also, Sion Yoon said, “I can receive this prize thanks to the prayers and cheers from team members and other people.” Seungwo Do, mentioned, “The team members worked in harmony. It was not an easy challenge. We received a good result. I am happy and proud of my team members.” According to Eunbi Na, “I really appreciate  God who was with us from the beginning to the end. I would like to give thanks to all the people who encouraged us and to God. “

According to Professor Kang Lee, “The results of Handong are one of the good examples to show the excellence of the educational curriculum of Handong. This result is almost two times higher compared with the second place team. The seventeen faculty of the School of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering will continue to nurture the best engineers by developing students’ potential.”

The Chips Chips Team of Handong is scheduled to join the International Robot Contest which will be held in October 2016, at the Korean International Exhibition Center (KINTEX), in Ilsan.
