-Research on urban development plans with universities of Nepal, Mongolia, and Vietnam
-Promoted joint sustainable urban development strategies for resolving urban issues of developing countries
Handong Global University promoted on-site surveys, hosted professional symposiums, issued research reports in order to raise issues related to urban development and education for the developing countries. HGU also contributed to developing policies of urban basic planning for the developing governments in Kathmandu, Nepal; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; based on cooperation from local universities and government organizations.

Most of the urban cities of the developing countries are faced with common urban environmental problems: poverty, water and air pollution, traffic congestion, and poor living environments. Long term urban development strategies and strategic infrastructures, improvement of the housing environment for the urban poverty class are required. The Urban Environmental Improvement Project of the Developing Countries introduces major concepts needed to establish urban basic plans to local university professors and government officials. This contributes to effective and sustainable urban policy establishment of the developing countries and further enhances research capacity building.

At the joint seminar co-hosted by Ton Duc Thang University and Handong Global University on August 6, green cities, available housing and city rehabilitation, smart cities and traffic were introduced to local city development professors and students. Applicable concepts and measures to address the issues in Ho Chi Minh were proposed. Furthermore, programs such as surveying Phu My Hung District in Ho Chi Minh City and visiting traffic center were provided.

After a massive earthquake in Nepal last April, Handong Global University dispatched an Earthquake Damage Restoration Team to Kathmandu, Nepal. This supported the temporary shelters by working with the Ministry of Construction of Nepal. In the last five years, Handong Global University has been enhancing the quality of life for people in the developing countries. Notable improvements were made in the Urban Environment Improvement Project in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and in a poor area of Ho Chi Minh.

UNESCO-UNITWIN was established in 1992 by UNESCO to facilitate cooperation and collaboration among universities, institutions and various organizations of developing and developed countries in a network to improve the availability of educational resources and opportunities and promote educational excellence in developing countries. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Handong Global University (HGU), Pohang, Republic of Korea, as the host University for UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Capacity Building for Sustainable Development of Developing Countries in the Asia Region in 2007.
※ UNITWIN project of Handong Global University has been promoting as part of ODA project by the Ministry of Education. HGU has been enhancing capacity building to nurture leaders, has led regional development projects, and established hub centers within the developing countries. These countries are low-income countries classified by the World Bank. Handong Global University has been supporting sixty universities from 28 countries.
