On July 4, 2016, the School of Law of Handong Global University and the International Committee of the Red Cross had an opening ceremony ‘Workshop on the Advanced Course for International Humanitarian Law’ at All Nations Hall of Handong Global University. From July 4 to 8, the ‘Workshop on the Advanced Course for International Humanitarian Law’ was held co-hosted by the School of Law of Handong Global University and the International Committee of Red Cross.
The International Humanitarian Law and Action Workshop aimed to provide general understanding on international humanitarian law, action, and basic principles of international criminal law in the international community where armed conflict and violence are ongoing or left a negative impact.
There were about 40 student participants from Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Mongolia. Eight people, the Law Advisor of ICRC, a Law professor from Japan, a lawyer in the US Army severed as lecturers. All the courses were provided in English.
Lectures, presentations, case studies, and group discussions followed. Richard Desgagne of the Asia Pacific Region of ICRC delivered a lecture, the ‘Outline of International Humanitarian Law.’ Jaecheon Won of the School of Law, HGU, presented ‘International Humanitarian Law and its Protection Mechanisms’. Lectures on the ‘Enactment of Humanitarian Law’ and ‘Recent Trends in International Criminal Law’ were also delivered.
The participants had an opportunity to seek in-depth understanding on international humanitarian law through group discussions and case sharing on the ‘South Ossetia Regional Conflict’ and ‘Medical Ethics in Emergency Situations’.
In the opening ceremony, President Soon-Heung Chang said, “I hope this event will serve as an opportunity to seek new perspectives regarding life, human dignity protection in armed conflicts and emergencies. Understanding the role of ICRC through this Workshop on International Humanitarian Law will assist all the participants. “
※ Terminology
International Humanitarian Law: International Humanitarian Law includes all the laws that regulate the conduct of war. These laws seek to protect persons and property that are affected by armed conflict. These laws cover all the international regulations for securing each individual’s dignity.
