The team consisting of Junekee Park (Kong ju National University), Chanhee Jung (Inje University), Taewhan Kim (Chungnam National Univeristy), Woohyung Lee (KoreaTech) and Yaeseol Lee (Handong Global University) and Sangbin Hwang (Konkuk Univeristy) received the grand prize for their design to provide a low energy water-purifying device for drinking water removing the cloudy particles of stream water.
The Engineering Innovative Center of Handong Global University hosted the ‘Creative Convergence Design Academy for 90% of the Marginalized’. The aim was to provide ideas for 90% of the marginalized to benefit from more technology from July 14 to 16 at HGU.
This Academy celebrated its 9th anniversary and initiated finding practical countermeasures to the problems of the marginalized. Student from different majors were combined with experts to develop useful technology for the marginalized who currently do not enjoy the benefits from this era of science technology.
This year, eighteen teams of 83 students from eighteen universities nationwide registered. Eight teams of 38 students passed the primary round. Four teams of nineteen students entered the final round.
The team consisting of Junekee Park (Kong ju National University), Chanhee Jung (Inje University), Taewhan Kim (Chungnam National Univeristy), Woohyung Lee (KoreaTech) and Yaeseol Lee (Handong Global University) and Sangbin Hwang (Konkuk Univeristy) received the grand prize with their design to provide a low energy water-purifying device for drinking water. The device removes the particles creating the cloudiness in stream water.

The gold medal went to a team consisting of Jinwoon Sung (Andong University), Hukju Chae (Andong University), Jungmin Park (HGU) and Jaemin Lee (HGU) with the development of a bamboo slicer and striper.
The silver medal went to a team who designed a hybrid dryer using sunlight, biomass, and heat storing tools. The team members were Keunsan Song (Konyang University), Jaehyun Kim (Youngnam University), Youngju Lee (Ewha Women’s University), Munsung Kong (KAIST), and Eunsong Kim (KAIST).
The bronze medal was given to a team consisting of Yoonchang Nam (Youngnam University), Esther Son (HGU), Haesang Cho (HGU) and Youngeun Kang (Hanyang University). This team developed a countermeasure to support the people who have difficulties with hearing impairment.
The Evaluation Committee selected the prize winners with the following criteria: appropriateness, sustainability and dissemination possibility, technological excellence, presentation and team work.
According to Yoonsik Han, who planned and started this Academy, “To provide support to our marginalized neighbor nurtures future and converged talents. Appropriate technology is converged technology. It requires creativeness and technology to make our hearts warmer. The genuine meaning of Creative Convergence Design is to nurture professionalism and global talents to practice love toward our neighbors. I hope this sprit will spread, not only to the participants, but also to the youth in Korea.”
The Center Director, Hwan-ki Young, said, “I look forward to seeing these efforts to gather our wisdom for 90% of the marginalized becoming reality in neighboring countries very soon. “
