-After the establishment of Uganda Innovation Technology & Entrepreneurship Center within Kumi University, cooperation between HGU and Uganda has been further enhanced.
- A cooperative venue was established after the official visit to Uganda by President Keun-hae Park
-Cooperative measures were discussed between HGU and Uganda for Uganda’s self-reliance
On June 14, 2016, cooperative measures between Handong Global University and Uganda were discussed with the delegation headed by Dr. Sandy Tickodri-togboa, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of Uganda and HGU.
The delegation had a luncheon with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Jongchoel Lee and the Vice President of Administration Shinik Kang, Director Jinwon Ahn of UNITWIN, Head Yoonsik Han of Green Appropriate Research Cooperation Center, and twenty -five professors and researchers from Handong Global University.
The delegation had a time to learn about UNITWIN projects and discussed cooperative measures between Uganda, HGU and the Korea n Technology Policy Research Institute. The Minister stated, “I hope that we can initiate cooperation for manufacturing and IT industry development in Uganda through the UNITWIN projects of HGU.”
The delegation consisted of Paul Isaac Musasichi, CEO of Kirra automobile, beside s the Minister of Education. The delegation was invited by the Science and Technology Policy Institute. This visit was the detailed cooperative meeting between Korea and Uganda. This is the first official visit after her visit to Uganda at the end of April.
Before this visit, a cooperative project between Handong Global University and Uganda Kumi University was initiated by establishing the Uganda Innovative Technology & Entrepreneurship Center: UITEC in Kumi University. It was hosted by the Appropriate Technology-based Entrepreneurship Training: ATET for three nights and four days from May 3 to 6, 2016.
The joint project between Handong Global University and Uganda Kumi University is part of developing start-ups and technology as part of the UNITWIN projects. This was implemented by HGU as part of being the host university of UNESCO-UNITWIN. HGU aims to aid in the development of local society in Uganda through appropriate, technology -based start-ups started by university students and local residents. Information dissemination and community level enterprises are also part of this thrust to strengthen Uganda.
At the ATET Workshop, held in May, there were fifty-two participants. Thirty-seven were Kumi University students. Fifteen staff and residents of Kumi NGO IDI, 5 professors of Kumi University and the faculty for Human Resource Nurturing were joined. The workshop was sponsored and led by Kumi university. 3 undergraduate school students of Kumi University joined as mentors and provided an opportunity to develop students’ capacity.
The prize winners of last year; High Efficiency Stove production and Dissemination Project (the group that received 1st place in the Start-ups Competition for university students), Peanut Processing and Selling Project in Kalapata ( the 2nd place, IDI staff and local residents), and the Student Bakery Union ( the group that received 3rd place in the Start-ups Competition for university students) will become businesses. To support these projects, ten students from the Society of Appropriate Technology called ‘‘Craist 90%” will be dispatched to Kumi University in July, for three weeks. They will support the development of each item with Kumi University students and IDI village residents. August, the ‘3rd WFK Youth Mid and Long Term Volunteer Team’ of six students from the School of Mechanical Control Engineering, the School of Management and Economics, and the School of Life Science will conduct joint research to develop each item developed through this workshop.
The ATET Workshop consists of in-depth programs. Presentations include: content related to the economic growth of Korea, the spirit of entrepreneurship, appropriate technology and business, the development of business item s, the Zen canvas, a business model design, and the announcement of project plans.
Since 2008, Handong Global University has operated the developing -country support projects. Some of the projects were the following: the Global Engineering Project, the Science and Technology Support Cooperation Project, the Global Engagement & Mobilization Project, the GEM Project, the Engineering Design Academy for the 90% Marginalized, the Creative Design completion for the 90% Marginalized, the UNESCO-UNITWIN Program, and the NITEC.
UNESCO UNITWIN; University Twining and Networking were established in 1992, in order to minimize the knowledge gap by supporting university education and research organizations. This begins to create a network between the developing countries and advanced countries. Self-reliance is fostered and builds competency in the developing countries. Handong Global University was designated as the first host university for UNITWIN in 2007.
※ The UNITWIN project of Handong Global University was implemented as part of the ODA Project of the Ministry of Education. Agreements are signed to build partnerships with developing countries. World Bank classifies the eligible countries based on their economics. The capacity building of universities, building up of leaders nurturing projects, and the regional development projects were implemented along with hub centers within the developing countries. As of May 2016, HGU is supporting sixty universities and institutions from twenty-eight developing countries.
