On June 8, 2016, Professor Sungman Shin, from the School of Counselling Psychology & Social Welfare of Handong Global University received a citation by the Prime Minister of Korea at ‘The 29th Prize Donation Ceremony in Information and Culture Fields.’ The ceremony was held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Korean Communications Commission. At the event, the commemorative ceremonies for Information and Technology Month and the Beautiful Internet World Week Declaration were also hosted.
Professor Shin received his doctoral degree at Boston University, and was appointed as a Professor of Handong Global University in 2004. He has been teaching at the School of Counselling Psychology & Social Welfare and the Graduate School of Psychology for twelve years. Now he is serving as the Head of the Counselling Psychology Center.
He is an activist promoting addiction prevention in Korean society by serving as consultant at the Ministry of Justice. He served as the Chairman of the National Policy Research Committee of the Society of Korean Counseling and as an Advisor for the Gyeongbuk Academic Clinic Center. Now, he is actively working as the President of the Society of Korean Addiction Counseling and as the Vice President of the Society of Korean Addiction Psychology.
Prof. Shin achieved remarkable results in developing counseling and educational research programs for the prevention and treatment of internet smartphone addictions. His contribution to prevent addiction in Korean society is highly recognized.
According to Professor Shin, “Korea’s internet and smartphones are the most highly advanced in the world. However, Korea is facing the side effects accordingly. This prize was granted due to my efforts to prevent and treat these side effects. This recognition means I must work harder since I am not the only one who put effort into resolving these problems. I will do my best to continue to bring social development. “
