On June 1, at Handong Global University Library, the UN Depository Library Designation Ceremony was held. The United Nations Department of Public Information Director, Maher Nasser, joined and graced the event.
The event was proceeded with commemorative remarks by President Soon-heung Chang, congratulatory remarks by Maher Nasser, and the presentation of the signboard of UN Depository Library. Students who attended this event read UN related books that were displayed in the event hall and used the computers to open UN data.
President Soon-heung Chang stated, “I am glad HGU can provide qualified information not only to the students of Handong and but also to every citizen of Pohang. This library distributes information for international issue and UN data for both students and local society. In addition, he added, “We can bring a true change by bringing synergy to research and projects.”
The Director said, “The era has ended where many people find a local library. Many libraries are closing their doors because many people find data through smartphones and computers. However, this library was created by the UN to access data and documents that are updated monthly. Through the library, we can receive up to date knowledge to save the world. I hope that many local citizens will utilize this library not only the students of Handong.
The UN library data including: documents, articles, and publications by the UN General Assembly, the United Nations Economic and Social Science Department, and the United Nations Security Council can be found on online. Students, professors, staff of Handong can find data conveniently by using their own computers. In addition, local residents and other university students can freely visit and can open data by using the designated computer.
Dag Hammarskjold Library was established in 1946. It operated the 160 UN Depository Libraries in 136 countries by managing and distributing publications of the UN.
※ Terminology
Dag Hammarskjold is a Swedish diplomat and served as the 2nd UN Secretary General from 1953 to 1961. He died during his term as Secretary General of the UN. In order to commemorate him, the library was named after Dag Hammarskjold.
