HGU, Shared Achievements and Examples of Globalization at the ‘66th UN NGO Conference’

On the first floor of Gyeongju Hwaback Convention Center, booths for various NGOs and organizations were established. Handong University operated three promotional booths including UNAI ASPIRE, UNESCO-UNITWIN, and Handong Global University.

 

ASPIRE is part of the United Nations Academic Impact. Aspire aims to practice ten specific principles including universal education with voluntary participation by university students. This is a global program to support global higher educational institutions. Institutions are encouraged to achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals established by the UN in 2011 through education and research suggested by the Secretary General of UN, Ki-moon Ban in 2008. Handong Global University is the Secretariat of the UN Academic Impact Aspire. In the promotion booths, activities and details of ASPIRE were introduced.

 

 

May 31, a service chaired by Professor Jinwon Ahn of the School of Management and Economics was held under the theme of ‘UNESCO UNITWIN Project for developing the capacity of the developing countries.

 

UNITWIN was established in 1992 to minimize the knowledge gap and promote the self-reliance of the developing countries by building a network of advanced and developing universities.  Handong Global University is the only university in Korea to host UNITWIN. Achievements of the projects, activities to enhancing capacity of the developing countries, and direction for other institutes’ participants are shared. In particular, on May 31, a workshop was held for the ‘UNESCO UNITWIN Project Developing the Capacity of Developing Countries’ chaired by the Professor Jinwon Ahn, from the School of Management and Economics. 

 

At the promotion booth, specialized educational achievements and cases were shared and activities of HE.ART, an NGO operated by the enrolled students and graduates was shared. As a higher educational institution, the achievements of global capacity building and development for local communities were introduced.

 

According to Hee-seop Jung, a participant, “I can figure out that our school operates varied booths. By visiting many NGO related booths, I realized how many people put tremendous effort into the development of international community.”

 

Anna Luisa Baptista from Portugal said, “I am working to enhance capacity building in Mozambique. The purpose of today’s visit is to search for NGOs to contribute to Mozambique where there are food and educational challenges. I learned from the activities of HGU and I was very impressed that HGU is doing various efforts for the international community.”
