On May 28, 2016, the ‘4th Start-up Ideas Competition with Audience Participation’ was held at the Best Western Hotel, Pohang. The event commemorated the fourth anniversary and aimed to encourage and support students of Handong who have creative and excellent start-up ideas and will take the lead in the future.
The competition was initiated in November 2014, and the last three competitions were held at Handong Global University, Pohang. The event was co-hosted by Pohang City and HGU. Citizens of Pohang could participate as audition evaluators. This built bridges of communication with the community.
Starting with the opening ceremony, there were idea presentations and Q&A sessions with thirteen teams. Evaluators voted, participants enjoyed a delicious dinner, there was a talk show, commentary was given on the ideas presented. The awards ceremony and closing ceremony followed.
Thirteen teams were participated. Each team presented their ideas for two minutes and thirty seconds. Then, there was a brief question and answer time. According to the final evaluation results, Sotongyi, WeChef, Surisurimaksuri, Caffeine Project, and GooDat teams received prizes.
All the prize winners will receive on-site visits and experiences either in Silicon Valley, Shanghai, or Israel, for three weeks. A round-trip ticket and accommodations will be offered and the winners will have a chance to meet entrepreneurs and receive start-up lectures.
Mr. Juchan Choi, Team Surisurimaksuri said, “I didn’t expect to receive an award this time because there were many excellent teams. I really appreciate this award. I was appreciated and surprised by by the response of the citizens of Pohang and their excellent questions. I haven’t decided where I will visit for the given three weeks. I will do my best to expand my perspectives on start-ups.”
According to Hyeonjae Park, GooDat Team, “I really appreciate being able to host this competition for students. The mentoring for two days and one night was very helpful and I will do my best to be one of the the creative talents based on this opportunity.”
In his closing remarks, President Soon-heung Chang mentioned, “My heart-felt thanks go to all the citizen of Pohang, students and staff of Handong who attended this event. I felt the passion of the citizens of Pohang once again. I really congratulate the five prize winners. I also want to really encourage those who did not receive a prize but did their best. Everyone is a winner and I would like to encourage everyone to keep trying. The most important thing is to challenge yourself.”
This competition was co-hosted by Pohang City and Handong Global University led by 60mph, the LINC Foundation, the Start-ups Supportive Team, and supported by Gyeongbuk Creative Economic Innovation Center, Pohang Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the University Creative Job Center of Pohang. Over the last four years fifty-two teams participated and introduced various ideas and items.
