On May 30, 2016, Handong Global University hosted a workshop for the ‘UNESCO UNITWIN Project for Developing Capacity for the Developing Countries’ at the 66th UN NGO Conference at HICO, Gyeongju. The workshop was held on the second day of the conference and Professor Jinwon Ahn served as chair of the workshop.
In the workshop, activities for building capacity of the developing countries centered around UNESCO UNITWIN projects were presented by Professor Jinwon Ahn, Keehong Kim and Soonkwon Kim. In addition, students of Graduate School of International Development Cooperation from Nigeria, Jamaica, and Nepal shared education and experience in Handong for achieving sustainable development goals.
Handong Global University created a booth display and introduced the roles required for strengthening international capacity and developing regional development as a higher educational institution. This set a new direction for other participating institutions.
The conference was hosted by the UN Department of Public Information, DPI, UN Academic Impact Korea, Dream Touch For All and Korea NPO Joint Committee. Gyeongju Province and Gyeongju City also supported the Conference. 4,351 people registered for the Conference from 699 institutions, Human Right Watch, Peace Boat, and Habitat for Humanity International. The NGO Conference is the most prestigious and meaningful event representing civil society in the world. This served as a venue to discuss major international cooperative issues by forming networks with NGO representatives from 1,500 global registered representatives.
According to President Soon-heung Chang, “I firmly believe that the advanced capacity of Korean citizens was introduced and further developed through this Conference. This was more significant since this was the first year to implement the Sustainable Development Goals from 2016 to 2030 and Korea was the host country.”
