On May 20, 2016, at the ‘8th Creative Design Competition for the 90% of the Marginalized’ received the grand, gold, and silver medal at KAIST University, Daejeon.
The three teams of Handong joined at the competition under with these themes: mobile newspaper applications for the blind and people with low vision; Eye Make It!, and; mobile application for dyschromatopsia. The teams received prizes.
According to Sungho Hong, “I am very glad we received prizes with my friends who have developed technology for the visually handicapped starting last year. I really dreamed and wanted to find and resolve the needs of those who are marginalized for a lifetime. In addition, I hoped that this opportunity would serve as a venue to draw more attention and encourage others to join in. “
Professor Sungsu Hwang mentioned, “This case is one of the examples that realizes the value of Handong: ‘To share what we have learned by utilizing our professional knowledge. The more technology advances, the less technology utilization so I sincerely hope that many students will have a great interest regarding this issue.”
The competition was initiated in 2009 to design appropriate technology for the marginalized from science technology, to increase purchasing power, and to develop sustainable design items. 315 students from seventy teams participated with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Engineering Education and Innovation Center, National Research Foundation of Korea, Scientists and Engineers Without Borders, KAIST RISTI, BK 21 Program in Chemical Engineering of Seoul National University, Foundation of Leading University in Academic and Industry, Woosuk University and Share and Technology Inc.
Professor Hyun-hoon Song, Representative of Share and Technology Inc., called for the continued interest and ideas from the young generation for 90% of the marginalized.
※ Prize Winners
▲ The grand prize (one million won, or about $1,000) was awarded to Team ‘Siseun’. The members were: Sungho Hong, Heeyeon Choi, Seunghee Ko, and Kiwon Seo.
▲ The Gold Medal (500,000 won, or about $500) was awarded to Team ‘Rainbow’. The members of the team were: Surlin Choi, Kihyeon Kwack, Heejung Shin, and Youngchang Jeon.
▲ The Silver Medal (500,000 won, or $500) was awarded to Team ‘Hello, World.’ The members were: Shim, Jaeyoung Hur, Sungeun Kwak, Seoungwhan Lee, and Isac Kim.
