25 graduates of Handong International Law School passed the bar exam in Washington D.C. to become U.S. attorneys in February, 2016. The bar exam is held twice a year in February and July and HILS nurtured 33 successful candidates last year.

HILS was established in 2002 as the first American style law school in South Korea and about 70% or 323 graduates of HILS have passed the US Bar Exam. This result is relatively high compared to other US Law Schools and HILS has been growing a reputation as a prestigious law school in the field of international law.

All the faculty of HILS has experience as U.S. attorneys and the curriculum is almost the same as any American law school style. Classes are delivered 100% in English. During the curriculum, students are required to experience internships at various governmental organizations such as the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office, the Supreme Court of Korea, Law firms in South Korea and abroad, private enterprises, and NGOs. Recently, HILS has not only nurtured US attorneys but has also nurtured international attorneys. Some graduates have acquired law credentials in India, New Zealand, and Australia through their completion of the required educational courses in the local area and the local exam processes. Two Indian graduates of HILS went to back to their country and passed the bar exam. Like these, HILS is growing as an international law school and gaining attention.

A graduate of HILS, Yang Lili from China, already took the Bar Exam in China before entrance to HILS. After three years of courses at HILS, she has become a successful candidate of the American Bar Exam. According to Ms. Yang, “I want to serve in a bridge role to connect the law and the economic borders of China, the U.S., and Korea based on Chinese law and American law.”

Since its establishment, HILS has been granting scholarships to foreign students from developing countries by providing them with a chance to transform their nations with law training. With these scholarships, HILS has been greatly contributing to nurture human talents who have a good impression of Korea and admire Korea.
