Handong Global University Registered as an NGO Institution of the UN Department of Public Information for the First Time among Korean Colleges

Handong Global University was enlisted in the NGO network of the United Nations Department of Public Information. This is a first for Korean Colleges. April 28, 2016, the UN Department of Public Information has decided to designate Handong Global University as an NGO institution. The enlisted colleges are Columbia University, the State University of New Jersey, and George Mason University.

 

The enlisted colleges actively participate in major issues of the UN such as the priority agenda suggested by the Secretary General of the UN. These colleges seek to resolve common issues such as sustainable development goals, human trafficking, climate change, sustainable energy, nuclear security, and illicit drug activity. In addition, they seek to resolve the items on the agenda and issues by joining various UN events and cooperative efforts.  

 

Handong Global University has been exerting tireless efforts in the fields of sustainable development, strengthening the capability of higher education, and global citizenship education by working with UN institutions as the hub university of UN Academic Impact and as the host university of UNESCO-UNITWIN. In addition, HGU has a close relationship with UN by receiving books from the United Nations Publication Board in 2014.

 

HGU has been preparing the 66th UN NGO Conference, May 30 to June 1, at Gyeongju HICO as the host institution. President Soon-heung Chang led the event as the Representative of NGO Conference Organizing Committee. According to Professor Jinwon Ahn, the overall manager of the UNSCO UNITWIN project, on May 31, a workshop under the theme of ‘UNESCO UNITWIN Project for Strengthening Capabilities of the Developing Countries.

 

HGU is planning to establish a promotion booth to introduce the achievements of UNESCO UNITWIN, globalization, and to share exemplary and successful cases.

 

※ Terminology

 

UN Department of Public Information was established based on Article 13 of the Resolution of the General Meeting in 1946. The roles of the UN Department of Public Information are to enhance global concepts and understandings on activities of the UN by utilizing radio, TV, printed materials, the internet, and video conferences.

 

The UN Department of Public Information seeks peace, development and human rights promotion of humankind by introducing activities and ideas of the UN, and communicating with various interested parties.
