More science and engineering brains in Handong than ‘SKY’
Handong Global University, known as a “small but strong university”, has clearly revealed the face of a small but powerful university in this survey.
Handong Global University students’ reception rates of ‘STEM scholarship’ offered by the government to support excellent students with science and engineering talents reached the highest among Korean private universities by 1.71%. Among 50 universities including national universities and characterized universities, Handong Global University ranked the top 5. Universities that ranked above Handong were GIST, Postech, UNIST and KAIST. Traditionally known for prestigious universities in Korea like Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University ranked 8th, 9th and 10th each.
STEM scholarship offered by the government is given to: freshmen both have outstanding GPA from high school(excellent results in rolling admission) and who study in the fields of natural science or engineering, top performers in Korean SAT, students who excel in academic studies for 2 years after enrollment and more.
This scholarship providing students with full fund is operated by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and Korea Student Aid Foundation. An official at Korea Student Aid Foundation says, “Even though Handong Global University itself is a very small school with only 4400 students, there are excellent students who meet the requirement to receive the STEM scholarship.” In order to vitalize universities located in noncapital regions, Handong Global University selects 70% of students from noncapital regions other than Seoul, Kyeongki or Incheon.
This policy is the reason why the university is still considered as a prestigious university. Handong Global University official indicated that “Handong Global University, located in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, is a Christianity-based mission school which was established in 1995.” He continued to indicated that “Excellent students who were able to enroll in universities in Seoul, decided to enroll in Handong Global University according to their personal belief.”
