On May 2, 2016, a panel discussion called ‘What is the Future that Alpha Go Shows us?’ was held at Osukhall, Handong Global University. (pic) Professor Kang Lee, from the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering served as the master of ceremonies leading the active discussions on the implications of artificial intelligence in society.

The panelists were Professor Hwachurl Son of the Global Leadership School; Professor Sinik Kang of the Global Edison Academy; Professor Sungyoung Shin of ICT Convergence; Professor Seungwon Ji of the School of Law, and Professor Injung Kim of the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. A number of students who were interested in artificial intelligence also attended.

In the discussion included sharing opinions, questions, and answers on artificial intelligence.

According to Professor Hwachurl Son of the Global Leadership School, “Alpha Go is a matter of politics and power. Those who have Alpha Go can threaten the have-nots. We need to have in-depth consideration regarding the publicity of Alpha Go’s development. Also, since this type of  technology will affect the life of many people, ethical and cultural consideration is essential.”

Professor Sinik Kang of the Global Edison Academy said, “The development of artificial intelligence technology will further widen the gap between the technology front runners and those who lag behind. Businesses must adapt to the changes and lead those changes. If a business cannot grow the business is likely to disappear. Any business providing meaningful solutions to meet customers needs will survive. If IT technology and artificial intelligence technology are not  utilized, the businesses will lagged behind their competition.”

During the questions and answers session, the definition of artificial intelligence was given.  Technologies or products that will be transformed due to artificial intelligence were discussed. The implication and threats of artificial intelligence within society were also addressed.

This was one of the relay special lectures of the ‘Alpha Go, Artificial Intelligence, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.’ The first lecture was ‘Big Data and Artificial Intelligence’ hosted by Professor Haebong Choi, from the School of ICT Convergence. “Machine Learning in Practice, Artificial Intelligence used by Alpha Go’ was also presented. This was the fourth special lecture.

The panel discussion was co-hosted by the Computer Science & Electrical Engineering School, the ICT Convergence Major, the Innovation Center for Engineering Education, and the Office of Academic Information. The panel provided a venue to think and consider the relationship between artificial intelligence technology, society, the Kingdom of God, the things we need to prepare, and HGU’s calling in this era.
