Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information delivering a special lecture ‘The UN and the Spirit of International Citizenship’ at Handong Global University.
Ahead of the 66th UN NGO Conference, which will be held on May 30, 2016, a special lecture on the UN was held. For advanced preparation, Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information, visited Korea and delivered a lecture. This was his third time visit to HGU. He is called a veteran since he worked at the UN for more than 28 years. He visited the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, Amman, Cairo, Vienna, and New York in order to deal with refugee issues, drug crimes, and public information.
The special lecture, ‘The UN and the Spirit of International Citizenship’ aimed to share the multi-international cooperative activities of the UN. The desire was also to develop positive attitudes in students as global citizens. Before the lecture, he reiterated the importance of the topic by saying, “In this era of rapidly accelerating globalization, international citizenship needs to be the basis of society in order to build a better society.”
Director Nasser briefly introduced the organization and background of the UN as an intergovernmental organization. In addition, he dealt with international several topics. One topic was the veto of a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Another topic was the function of the UN Security Council that created the UN nuclear sanctions, a recent social issue. In particular, he delivered vivid accounts of the activities of the UN staff that have global impact in major fields such as: education, the environment, terrorism, disease, and economic issues.
In a short interview after the lecture, Director Maher Nasser highly praised HGU by saying, “As a hub university of UN Academic Impact, HGU is serving as a bridge between higher education areas of Korea and the UN.” He also requested the attendance of the students of HGU at the conference by saying, “I sincerely hope that the young energy and research spirit that you showed will be experienced at the UN NGO Conference.”
In the lecture, the Dean of International Affairs, Jaecheon Won, professors, and students filled the classroom. Various questions were raised such as the role of the UN and North Korean policies.
