On April 6, Handong Global University held the award ceremony for the 55 recipients of the Joshua Scholarship. In this ceremony the children of pastors and the children of missionaries attended including President of HGU, Soon-heung Chang.

Beginning last September, HGU has received 230 million won from 84 donors to support missionary kids and children of pastors attending HGU through the  ' Joshua Scholarship '. The scholarship collected 98,400,000 won. This provided 26 students with enrollment fees, 29 students with living expenses, and 3 million won or 600,000 won to students for other expenses this semester. If the recipient students will not take leave of absence in the next semester, recipients will receive either six million won or 1.2 million won scholarships.

The ceremony consisted of an introduction of the scholarship, encouragement from President Soon-heung Chang, major details of the Joshua Scholarship and a questions and answer session.

President Chang is delivering remarks.

In his remarks, President Soon-heung Chang said, “I have had great interest in missionary kids and the children of pastors from my inauguration. I thought and prayed to find a way to support them. Now we can support them through the Joshua Scholarship. We couldn’t provide what was needed just from HGU so we decided to collect love from sponsors. Now, today, we can donate to the Joshua Scholarship for the first time.” In addition, he added, “For those who are missionary kids and pastors’ kids, the sense of globalization, multiple language skills, and artistic talents are advantages. I firmly believe these recipients will be leaders like Joshua in this era taking the lead to change the world at Handong, in Korean churches, and in the world.”

According to Issac Lim, an undergraduate student from the School of Global Leadership, “At first, I had no expectation to receive the scholarship. However, due to others’ recommendations I applied for this scholarship. I prayed to God to meet my financial shortage through any method. I really appreciate God’s answer to my prayer.”

Eunbi Jin, from the School of Management and Economics mentioned, “I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the sponsors. I know supporting others is not an easy decision. I think I will not let others down when I consider the love and care that I have just received. I was in a difficult situation financially. This scholarship has lifted my burden and given me new energy.”

Eun-young Kim, the Chief of the International Cooperation Team of HGU, reiterated, “The Joshua Scholarship is like an anchor of hope to overcome despair. When you go forward to fulfill the vision that God has given to students, you face difficulties and hardships. However, this is the Scholarship to cheer students so they will gain victory in their faith and hope.”

The scholarship matches one student with one donor. The recipient students will send a letter of appreciation to their sponsors once a semester.  The candidates will experience an ongoing relationship including meeting together once a year.
