On March 21, at Handong Global University, the Foundation for HGU-POSTECH Regional Strategic Specialization Project held the opening ceremony of the ‘CK Regional Strategic Academic-Industry Council.’ In attendance were professors and staff of HGU and POSTECH, twenty-five members of Innobiz Council, and advisory members of Pohang city.
Innobiz is a compound word combining Innovation and Business. The Council consists of technology innovation-oriented SMEs that are competitive based on technology advantages.
The ‘CK Regional Strategic Academic-Industry Council’ was established to create a new growth engine and resolve current issues in the fields of energy and environment in Gyeongbuk and the eastern coast of Korea. This location is the hub of the energy cluster that utilizes SMEs’ competency, innovative technology in energy and the environment, human resources and material infrastructures. The converged human resource nurturing systems in energy and the environment of the Foundation for HGU-POSTECH Regional Strategic Specialization Project are also located here.
The Council pledged to actively support the development of a leading model in converged research in academic-industry energy and the environment. The Council also pledges to nurture excellent talents through the wisdom of these leaders: the President of the Innobiz Daegu-Gyeongbuk Area, Sangsu Kim, the President of the Council; the Heads of the Foundation of Academic-Industry Cooperation, Professor Jaeyoung Lee and Inbum Lee; and Hyunsoon Kim, the Vice-President of the Council.
President Sangsu Kim mentioned, “In many universities, the Council for Academic-Industry Cooperation has been operating. However, for companies, it is hard to share practical current issues and seek the countermeasures with professors and students. Our work is to show one of the innovative academic-industry cooperation examples. Through the Council, representatives of regional SMEs are presenting vision and current issue of the company to professors and students. Furthermore, we have a system to resolve current issues faced by each company by matching up students and professors with those companies. It is expected that this system will greatly contribute to resolving the challenges of SMEs and will nurture regional industries.”
According to Head of the Foundation, Prof. Jaeyoung Lee, “Through this Council, the University can offer technology and ideas that companies need. By doing so, we can provide a venue to stimulate innovation in order to share internal resources. We will become a role model in a new form of academic-industry cooperation by hosting regular joint workshops with representatives of companies, professors, and students. Furthermore, we will establish problem-solving banks for current issues by working with local companies, HGU, and POSETCH. We will operate converged educational courses in energy and the environment through the Capstone Project.”
HGU was designated as one of the regional strategic projects titled 'The Foundation for Nurturing Converged Human Resources in the Fields of Sustainable Energy, the Environment, and the law in Gyeongbuk Province and the Eastern Sea.’ The CK-1 project was promoted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. The 10 billion won funds will continue for five years long with 2.1 billion distributed per year.
