On March 16, 2016, at Hyoam Chapel, Handong Global University had a scholarship awarding ceremony at Hyoam Chapel. The Director of the Office of International Affairs, Mr. Jaechun Won, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Three alumni, including the President of the Alumni Association of HGU, Mr. Yoogang Choi, were present at the ceremony. Remarks from the President of the Alumni Association of HGU began the event. Next, came the presentation of the scholarship. Remarks by the Dean of Academic Affairs followed.

The Alumni Association of HGU awarded the Certificate of Vision Scholarship to three undergraduate school students: Yaerim Lee, a senior in the School of International Studies, Languages & Literature; Gyeongmin Jin, a junior, in the School of International Studies, Languages & Literature; and Jisu Kwon, a junior, in the School of Life Science. The participants gathered at the chapel expressed their hearty congratulations through their applause.

This event aimed at supporting juniors doing their best by serving their neighbors with a dream to change the world. The three designated students received 14 million won for a year and some living expenses. Their enrollment costs were included in the Scholarship. The top two recipients will also receive their dormitory expenses for one semester. Through this Scholarship, the mentoring system connecting seniors and juniors will be initiated so they can share their ideas or experiences academically, professionally, and spiritually.

The President of the Alumni Association of HGU said, “When I was a student at HGU, I faced a financially difficult situation. Back then, professors and my friends paid my tuition fees instead of me. It is thanks to their love that I stand here. When I entered this school, the professors shared the vision of a tuition fee free school. Today’s Scholarship is a small move toward fulfilling the vision. Now, we want to start the stepping stones for three students at HGU.”

According to Gyeongmin Jin, a Scholarship recipient of the Alumni Association of HGU, “I really appreciate the former students of HGU. These alumni take thought for their juniors, HGU, and collect scholarship money even after they graduated. I am thankful that I am attending this school. I am humbled by receiving this scholarship. I will continue to do my utmost best.” Also, Yaerim Lee mentioned, “I have only one year left at HGU, and I am grateful that I have a holy sense of responsibility. I want to share the love I have received with my juniors.”

Starting with scholarship donations, the Alumni Association of HGU is planning to award scholarships every year to fulfill the vision of establishing a university without tuition fees. In addition, the Association will strengthen the network between alumni and continue collecting funds for the development of HGU and their juniors. “Through this Scholarship event, I want to deliver a clear message of gratitude for the current environment. The highest value is the value of sharing our hearts,” said by the President of the Alumni Association of HGU, Mr. Yoogang Choi.
