Chair Professor of HGU, Dr. Soonkwon Kim, Challenges with Global Food Crisis and Climate Change

From last fall, Chair Professor of HGU, Dr. Soonkwon Kim, (CEO of Dr. Corn and Board of Director of International Corn Foundation) has been cross-breeding in hills and fields of Haenamseong, the place where the warmest area in China, with the fund by POSCO.

This project is titled as Super corn+bm3+high sugar under the aim of enhancing productivity of bio-ethanol from abandoned corn stalk.

In addition, for the first time in Asia, hybrid seed has been producing for registering new bio-maize varieties to the government of China.

For the half century, Dr. Kim had a research in eco-friendly maize breeding in various countries, and he made a success in a new maize variety which overcame harvesting amount reduction, and collapse.

Super maize which will be named as 'Kor-China Super Oak No.1' was tested in Sunyang, Dandong and three Northeast Provinces of China and its excellence has been recognized so it is expected that this development will resolve food shortage in the North Korea and south-north cooperation for unification as well as multiplication of maize in China.

Professor Kim also has been studying black maize breeding for preventing foot and mouth disease and avian influenza by producing seven more leaves compare to the conventional variety.

Last year, the hybrid variety production and founder's seed multiplication of Junghan Kul No.1 and Junghancharl No.1 have been successfully tested.

In addition, Professor Kim has been providing sugar from maize to children and seniors in six states in Cambodia by developing honey maize new varieties that are resistant to endemic in all the countries of Cambodia, and Asia with the fund raising efforts of International Maize Foundation and support by Ministry of the Interior.
 
※ Terminology
Breeding [育種]: Breeding is the reproduction of offspring, usually animals or plants that are valuable to the life of mankind.
 
Bm: Shortened word from brown mid, referring to the condition of middle parts of maize changes into brown color. Change into brown color in the middle parts of maize means that sugar contents is very high.
