Professor Gyungmo Ahn was Awarded a Prize Conferred by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries

Professor Ahn has been serving as a professor of Spatial Environment System Engineering at HGU since March 1995. He received his doctoral degree in Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida in June 1993. Since teaching at HGU, Professor Ahn has been promoting research activities related to the East Sea. His research activities in the field of coastal research have benefitted Pohang and Gyeongbuk Province starting with research projects on beach erosion factors and restoration countermeasures for Songdo Beach, Pohang in June 1999.

Professor Ahn was recognized for his contributions to the development of seashore management policy. He also strengthened capacity building through his survey of the shoreline erosion occurring because of the sea’s currents. He selected candidate sites for erosion management, and provided consultation to plan research along the targeted shore line. Back then, he contributed to investigation of the erosion factors of Songdo beach that were related to civil complaints against Posco, made by the citizens of Pohang. His work contributed to preserving the seashore and provided seashore management research in a scientific and objective way.

From April to October 2009, he was the Principal Investigator for the seashore erosion factors of Hujung Beach, Uljin, requested by Uljin Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd.
He also joined government projects for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. He was recognized for his excellent projects.

Professor Ahn, joined to the ‘Development of a Wave Observation Device Project’ using nautical X-band radar. This supplemented the current wave observation device by using nautical X-band radar. This instrument was developed for the first time in the world and enhanced the measurement accuracy contributing to the development of maritime measurement devices.

From 2005 to 2009, the ‘Eco-friendly Seashore Leisure Space Securement Technology Development’ was selected as the best project. In addition, he served as the former Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy carrying out research projects.
Professor Ahn joined as Principal Investigator of 'X-band radar for nautical measurement devices after 2011. At that time HGU was designated as a regional hub university and joined other research investigations. Professor Ahn suggested factors and restoration measures for Gyeongbuk seashore erosion, and established a utilization database.
