HGU Established a Science and Technology Center in Nepal

January 26, 2016, Handong Global University had an opening ceremony for the Nepal Innovation Technology and Entrepreneurship Center, hereinafter refered to as “NITEC", at Pokara University with 150 participants including government officials of the two countries, many professors, and local residents.

The participants in the opening ceremony included: the Korean ambassador to Nepal, Yong-Jin Choi; the President of HGU, Soon-heung Chang; the Director of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Youngsu Jeon; the faculty of Handong Global University; the President of Pokhara University, Chiranjeebi Prasad Sharma; as well as the former Mayor and Executive Officer of Pokhara, Uday Bahadur Rana Magar.

The Korean ambassador to Nepal, Yong-Jin Choi, said in his remarks, "The NITEC project is very significant and meaningful not only for academic exchange between HGU and Pokhara University but also for strengthening scientific technology exchange through its operation as the hub center. I expect that NITEC will greatly contribute to revitalization of community businesses through technology development in the regional community. This will also nurture entrepreneurs.  

Professor Yoonsik Han, Dean of the NITEC Project, expressed his vision and dream saying, "I sincerely hope the Appropriate Technology Project of NITEC will lay a firm cornerstone to spearhead the advancement of science and technology in Nepal."

There were congratulatory remarks during the opening ceremony made by distinguished guests. The agreement was exchanged between HGU and Pokara University. The Appropriate Technology Project of NITEC was introduced. The ribbon was cut, the sign board was hung, and visits were made to the Appropriate Technology Exhibition Hall and the research laboratory of the Center. 

Eight people from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the Research Foundation, and the hub center of Nepal participated. They discussed the organizing committee and sought ways for the government organizations and hub centers to successfully implement the science and technology support projects in the developing countries. 
 
NITEC is the Appropriate Science Technology Hub Center part of the Science and Technology Support Projects implemented by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.Nepal is the third center to be established following the centers in Cambodia and Laos.

This is a four year agreement that started in July 2015 and will continue until June 2019. The goal is to provide countermeasures to overcome poverty and to build a sustainable infrastructure through Appropriate Technology Development. The fields of sunlight, small hydro power, and specialty processing in the Himalayas will be developed. This will provide support for start-ups by local residents. 

NITEC is an outgrowth of the ATET, Appropriate Technology Entrepreneurship Training program last year. 100 students from Pokara University and local residents were part of the opening ceremony. 


The ATET program was an educational workshop designed to develop appropriate technology for local residents and technology based projects.

The program consisted of lectures on economic development using the model of Korea. Examples were given of entrepreneurship, appropriate technology, business practices, ways to develop business items, business model designs and ways to draft work-plans. Faculty and researchers from Handong Global University offered lectures and mentored the participants. 

Sixteen teams consisting of students from Pokara University and local residents joined together to develop technology based items. According to the final results, the prize winners received prizes. The prize winners received consultations and support to develop their projects including prize money.
