Handong Global University is scheduled to establish the Martyrs Monument on the 20th anniversary date. The monument will be located at Fiji Martyrs Memorial Plaza behind Hoyam Chapel with lists and a detailed account of the martyrs since the foundation of HGU. Any future martyrs can also be commemorated by members of HGU.
The Pastor of HGU Chapel and four professors took the lead to establish the Martyrs Monument. The team said, “We collected data continuously beginning in July and created a digitized homepage. We collected, digitalized, and stored data using an online service. Based on this information, we established a web-page. A new list of martyrs will be developed and data collection will continue.”
In addition, the team defined HGU’s martyrs “There are many definitions of martyrdom. The standard of martyrdom at HGU is the first martyrs: Kyungsik Kang and Youngmin Kwon. Based on these students, people who were not considered martyrs are now also recognized as martyrs.”
At the Martyrs Monument, there is a name plate for Kyungsik Kang and Youngmin Kwon, the first martyrs, July 6~10, 1997. The next name plates are for: Professor Sookhee Choi, November 2004 to January 2007; Yoomi Kim, May 8, 2011 to October 31, 2012; and Soyeon Park, December 2010 to February 2011 will be added.
There was continual discussion about how to commemorate HGU’s other martyrs. However, there was not enough room to add individual markers to commemorate all the martyrs. Financial support for establishing the Martyrs Monument will require on-going funds collected through special offerings.
There were many obstacles such as: the venue, current expenses and long-term expenses. However, the present solution provides a way to commemorate the other martyrs. The team said, “We appreciate God’s valuable property and blessings.
