On November 4, the Gazelle Team of HGU graduates, received the grand prize at the Start-ups Competition Utilizing Defense Technology. The prize winners were Hansol Kim and Hyunsuck Kim, graduate students of the School of Mechanical and Control Engineering.
The team’s idea was a ‘Monitoring device for knee rehabilitation.’ The team converged technology to monitor rehabilitation information data through an EMG senor and an HRS sensor in Professor Jaeho Kim’s laboratory paired with a ‘knee bending wearable leg backing device’ from the Ministry of National Defense. The device is expected to provide information for rehabilitation patients’ proper posture, self-rehabilitation, medical diagnosis and digital health care.“
Hansol Kim said, “It seems the reason I received the grand prize was because of my creativity. Handong Global University has great interest in helping and changing the world, so technology development or research is also focused on that area. Compared to the ideas from other schools, HGU encouraged us to support rehabilitation through creating new products.”
Hyunseok Kim said, “Whenever I visited a rehabilitation hospital, I found rehabilitation therapists provided treatments based on their experiences and knowledge. However, we can give more practical support in rehabilitation programs by providing direct data. Rehabilitation therapists can also offer better services because of this data. In addition, the price for the device was lowered so patients can use the device readily.”
After receiving the grand prize, the team usually receives patent rights from the Ministry of Defense. In addition, the prize winners receive various offers for start-ups and new businesses. Besides, start-ups the support fund provided 15,000,000 won (or about $15,000) to research development programs for the Agency for Defense Development, entrance into the Defense Venture Center of the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality. The recipients are also given preference to enter SBC Startup School.
Hansol Kim said, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Jaehyo Kim and Jaeyoung Lee. I can feel the hands of God in every process and every step.”
The Start-ups Competition that Utilizing Defense Technology was the second annual competition. So far, information on defense technology was considered top secret information. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration and Agency for Defense Ministry hosted this event in order to provide a venue to actively utilize defense technology in the private sector and to enhance defense technology.
