HGU Received the Grand Prize in the ‘Korea Charter Education’ Contest

Handong Global University received the grand prize in the ‘Korea Charter Education’ hosted by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Korea Youth Work Agency, and the Chungcheogbu-do Office of Education. On December 2, HGU received the award and the prize money of 10,000,000 won (about $10,000) at Yangae Tower, Seoul.
The ‘2015 Korea Charter Education’ award is given to individuals and organizations that accumulated remarkable achievements for more than three years in order to revitalize practical character education.
Since its establishment in 1995, HGU has been operating using: ▲honesty education to lead a sound society, ▲ social volunteer education to serve the local area and the world, ▲ community education to with others converging life and learning with various character education programs.
HGU has been putting great effort into ‘holistic character education that converges life and learning’. From the beginning, HGU has been implementing the ‘HGU Honor System’ and the ‘Unsupervised Testing System’. In the ‘Unsupervised Testing System’ a test is given without a supervisor present. The HGU Honor System maintains honesty and character in students’ lives. Both systems are part of the culture that trains students to have honor and honesty even in the small things.
In order to meet the goal of nurturing human resources HGU prepares ‘Social Service Education that serves the region and the world.” HGU has a mandatory social service course in the liberal arts for all the students. Korea has about 140 volunteer organizations and programs. As of 2014, there were over 1,8000 participants. Other parts of HGU’s culture that nurtures talent include the Student Union, clubs or circles and volunteer social activities.
‘Community education with all the people’ is a special educational course at Handong. Under the guiding professor’s leadership, about 35 assigned students form a group mixing years, genders, and majors. In particular, the dormitories of HGU are operating Residential Colleges. Through the RC, students of HGU experience an environment that forms a community to pursue life and learning. This brings harmony between school life and non-school life.
President Soon-heung Chang said, “Handong Global University established the ‘Handong Character Educational Center’ to develop character courses, to establish character evaluation models, and to spread the character education model. This center has been sharing character related systems and achievements for twenty years. The Center is helping HGU take the lead in developing and spreading character.”
Handong Global University was designated as an Excellent Organization in the ‘2015 Korea Charter Education’ program which was hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
