December 5, 2015, at Newton Hall, ‘the 1st Global Start-ups Competition’ was hosted at Handong Global University, in Pohang.
This was hosted by the Foundation of LINC and UNESCO UNITWIN. It was implemented by the Graduate School of International Development Cooperation of HGU. This competition aimed to provide education for start-ups in developing countries. The competition also developed practical business models through workshops. International students from the developing countries were recruited to participate with Korean students who have great interest in start-ups.
The event included an opening ceremony, performances, various other events and a closing ceremony. As exterior panel, CEO of MYSC, Jungtae Kim, Representative Jung-hoon Lee of Step, and former Director Moders Link Korea, Sungho Lee were participated.
For the three prize winners, the prize money will give them an opportunity to experience the start-up environment and to test their start-up by visiting the developing countries.
Recently, in Korea, start-ups in foreign countries are increasing. The government of Korea is supporting start-ups in foreign countries through its policy. Universities and enterprises are attracting foreign start-ups.
However, this competition focused on the developing countries which desperately required income and economic growth but are marginalized due to the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in businesses. This competition had great significance because it provided education for the students with great interest in start-ups in developing countries.
In this process, Korean students and foreign students made teams and suggested successful start-ups models. In addition, the Bottom up Approach through start-ups was given to HGU’s start-ups and the related organizations. This matches the identity of HGU by providing mutual growth for the developing partner countries. This will be an on-going new challenge for HGU to begin foreign start-ups.
