JJ Ventures Team consisted of graduate students from the School of Mechanical Control Engineering, Jinwook Kim, Jihoon Kim, Hyunseok Kim and the School of Management and Engineering, Youran Shin. The group was designated as an ‘excellent team’ at the ‘Start-ups Project in Natural Science and Engineering’.
The ‘Start-ups Project in Natural Science and Engineering’ is part of the ‘Start-up Growth Technology Development Project.’ Eighty out of 350 teams were selected to be supported to begin start-ups with development funds worth 50,000,000 won (about $50,000). Ten excellent teams were selected in the final evaluation round. Technical experts and professional investors gave their input last September when they reviewed the eighty teams.
The idea of JJ Ventures Team was to ‘develop three-dimensional, wearable input devices to monitor continuous strength based on physical signals. The major applications were ▲establishing and monitoring a data base for stroke patients’s exercise treatment plans and supporting rehabilitation training plans. The targeted users were people are suffering from hemispheric paralysis. The device would measure the physical information from patients to monitor the recovery of function in their hands and arms. The device would provide valuable input to assist in creating the proper program for patient recovery.
According to Jinwook Kim, “I have great interest in utilizing these types of interfaces. I have been a part of the Sign Circle Club. Naturally, I have great interest in physically challenged and socially marginal people. I started this project with the idea connecting this device to patients needing rehabilitation.”
Last October, an investment attraction briefing was held hosted by the Small and Medium Business Administration and the Korea Angel Investment Association. Excellent teams of designated universities included: two teams from Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. Each item from the teams was introduced and next January, an investment attraction briefing will be hosted.
Jinwook Kim also added, “We are constantly preparing start-ups with these projects. These start-ups fit under the goal of healing the life of patients with physical disabilities. This also enhances the lives patients which is highly desired to help people function in society.”
