HGU Opened ‘Global Convergence Studies’ for Foreign Students

Handong Global University opened Global Convergence Studies (GCS) for foreign students. The GCS will start the second semester of this academic year. The students themselves will select and organize their courses, receive evaluations from the university and then take the courses.

The GCS were created after reflecting on the necessity of ‘revitalizing creative education through self-designed multi-displinary converged majors.’ The aim is to further strengthen varied majors and education in order to attract foreign students.

Currently, HGU has been providing 100% English lectures for three majors: Global Management, US and International Law, and Information Technology. HGU aims to offer more opportunities for foreign students to meet various academic desires.

Students who want to take a course need to submit an application form to the School of Creative Convergence Education. Currently, a separate global convergence committee has been operating in order to approve or reject the major.

Students can choose courses from their second major (33 credits) and their first major (66 credits). The major courses can consist of open courses at HGU, courses with sister universities in Korea and abroad, and opened courses from the Massive Open Online Courses. In addition, students can choose the name of the course themselves.

The newly opened GCS has additional courses for a global university. Fifty-three students were dispatched to HGU this semester which is the highest number from the recent three years. The staff of the Office of International Affairs said, “The exchange students from European Universities are increasing. HGU has been designated to receive national scholarship support for the GKS Projects. At this time, seven students have been selected as scholarship recipients.” With the increasing number of foreign students, it is expected that the number of students majoring in GKS will expand.

The Head of the Office of General Affairs, Professor Chungrok Bang said, “With this newly opened ‘Global Convergence Studies’ Program, foreign students can design and complete their major. This will contribute to HGU’s growth as a global university. “

*GKS(Global Korea Scholarship): the Korean government’s program to attract foreign students by granting full scholarships so that they can take courses at Korean domestic universities.
