The Founding Ceremony of the ‘Handong Unified Korea Center’

November 12, 2015, Handong Global University held the founding ceremony of the Handog Unified Korea Center in order to take the lead in this era of unification. This ceremony consisted of two sessions: a commemorative ceremony and a special lecture at Hyoam Chapel, HGU.
The center will provide the following:
▲ focused-educational aims to support North Korean defectors so they can successfully enter school life and Korean society after graduation,
▲ education to nurture future leaders after unification,
▲development of a unified converged curriculum,
▲ education and social adaptation programs for North Korean defectors after unification,
▲ a homogeneity recovery program, and
▲promotion activities such as establishing a network with Korean and international institutions, researching, surveying, publishing reports, and hosting seminars and workshops.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chairperson of the Committee of International Cooperation, In-ho Song. After the prayer by the Vice-Head of the Center, Prof. Young-choon Park; and the sermon by Pastor Gi-ho Kim, there was a performance by Pitchpipe and congratulatory remarks by President Soon Heung Chang.
In his congratulatory remarks, President Soon Heung Chang, said, “Unification is coming soon. Looking at the issue of unification not only from the national and security perspectives but also from the Christian perspective is an important task. I sincerely hope that the Handong Unified Korea Center will suggest new forms of unity for Korea. The Center will play a key role to bring unification earlier and to write a new history of successful unification.“
A plaque of appreciation was conferred to Pastor Gunsik Cho of Pohang Baptist Church recognizing the church’s tangible and intangible efforts on behalf of North Korean students.
The Head of the Center, Eunju Shin reiterated in her remarks, “Unification is our calling in this era. This is a multi-national challenge that goes beyond Northeast Asia. It is not limited to our country. We will provide various programs for a unified Korea by working with the related institutions and organizations. In addition, we will nurture talents for the unified Korea who will break the wall between the two Koreas just like Jesus did.”
After the ceremony, as part of the second session, Professor Young-jun Choi, of the Global Edison Academy, delivered a special lecture. In his lecture, he stressed that “Korean churches need to prepare for the era of a unified Korea by taking examples of Nikolaikirche Church, Germany. I look forward to the impact that the Handong Unified Korea Center will have in preparing for the imminent unification of Korea.”
