Ludwig van Beethoven (1770~1827) was a German composer between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music. He remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His hearing began to deteriorate in his 30s. Since he suffered from hearing loss he had to give up the life of a composer. However, with his musical genius he composed various pieces of music including symphonies, operas, and orchestral music up to the end of his life.

During the 4th Regular Concert by Handong Orchestra, four songs including: Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, ‘the Heroic’ and Max Bruch’s ‘Kol Nidrei’ were played. The concert began with ‘Canon on a Ground Base’ by Henry Purcell; an English musician with freewheeling beauty. The following piece was by George Bizet’s (1838~1875) Le Arlesienne Suite No. 2 Minuet. ‘Kol Nidrei’ was played with Cellist Yoonjung Heo. Lastly, Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, ‘the Heroic’, was performed.

Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, ‘the Heroic’ contains the young Beethoven’s spirit of great ambition and shows his iron will. The music was completed in 1804. It was believed Beethoven originally wrote this work dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate the French Revolution. However, Beethoven withdrew his dedication of the third symphony to Napoleon after hearing the news that Napoleon ascended to become Emperor. The work is in four movements and compared to other traditional symphonies, the size is huge. People still love this music and its greatness.

Sungman Shin, the guiding professor for the Handong Orchestra said,“ We chose this work for students to encourage them to finish their race whether it is hard or easy, without giving up. ” In addition, regarding ‘Kol Nidrei’, he mentioned that “By the end of this year, I hope that you have experienced the beauty of music.”

Cellist Yoonjung Heo was accompanied by the Handong Orchestra and played ‘Kol Nidrei’. ‘Kol Nidrei’ refers to the Day of God and is like a musical prayer.

In fact, there is no major course or department for music at HGU. Many students perform their talents voluntarily. Handong Orchestra has been performing concerts regularly providing comfort and healing to the students through music. The newly designated conductor, Eui-whan Jung, led the team successfully.

Conductor, Eui-whan Jung graduated from the College of Music in Hanyang Univ and majored in conducting at the Graduate School of the University of Tennessee. After his graduation, he was designated as the vice conductor of Handong Orchestra. The concert was hosted on November 19 at Hoyam Chapel, HGU.
